Its called a hemiola. It's a rare thing to do in music, but I actually enjoy it. Symphonic music often uses this technique.

All I did was run away from my friend who was trying to punch me in the face as an April Fools joke. I swear, I was on defcon 5 all day.

Well in a way I can see where he is coming from, because to the common ear, genres are quite different in style. When you look at instrumentation, lyrics, and mood, they seem starkly different. But in reality, looking at the musical theory of many songs could draw many connections, mainly how chord progressions have evolved and where they are used. To a point you could make a giant chart of the chords used in music, and draw connections between all different genres, and watch then shape differently as different genres interpret them differently. This is why many songs are covered by artists who have no genre connections to the source material, the songs can be adapted into the different genre because the chords progressions are familiar enough. Case and point, the I-V-VI-IV chord progression found everywhere, and documented by The Axis Of Awesome
Perhaps to show you're friend the connections, plays him the chorus (as painful as it may be) to I kissed a Girl by Katy Perry, then point out that the vocal line is the exact same (excuse the different key), as the Guitar Riff from Hemispheres that is heard around 2:35. Then play from the monsters section from La Villa (point out its from the same album for similarity) and then play him power house, where the riff was based. That should show how influences work to him at least.
The problem is that my friend doesn't know that much about music. The best he can do is play a few simple songs on his Spanish guitar and read tab. He pretends that he knows what defines a style or genre, but he doesn't really. I even admit to not knowing some things about musical style, but at least I know the basics. If I showed him the comparison between those two songs, he'll probably still won't have a clue.

So I was talking to my friend, and he doesn't believe that modern music originated from the blues. I tried to reason with him, but he still doesn't believe. When he gave the arguemnt that Katy Perry (excuse me for saying her name) isn't a product of the blue's legacy, I told him, "first came the blues, then jazz, then rock and roll, then hard rock, then pop, then Katy Perry." He still doesn't believe.
Then again, he says he hates Rush and listens to weird Japanese crap, so his opinion shouldn't matter.

I'm a huge band geek. I play trumpet. Our ego makes everyone hate us, but us trumpet players unite together for a single cause: to destroy all woodwinds.

Manhattan Project?

Hell, I just like everything by Rush. I don't know why, but that's just me.
As for VT, the original sounds better to me. Just the echo on the vocals on the remix just kill it for me.

This is a really special occasion, yet I'm not hearing any news about it. Anyone have any clue?

I know it sounds weird, but I actually like Geddy's Voice as it is. I wouldn't be against it, but I wouldn't enjoy it either. If he has trouble singing, then he should consider doing it.

This solo just gets me in the mood every time.
I also love YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, and even Limbo. I just love the instrumentals!

They do use a lot of synth, I agree. But Hold Your Fire is probably my all time favorite album. You can actually hear the more guitar oriented sound coming back in HYF. Just the sound of it is calm yet upbeat. It's my kinda music.
PoW and GUP are amazing too. Then again, is there a Rush album that isn't amazing?

Well, tomorrow is the big day!
Look on the bright side, I get to laugh at everyone else in my class.

Anyone think that this is bad? For my final exam for my gym class, our teacher has told us to make a dance and perform it to a song. I chose YYZ because it was the only song I could think of. I already made up 1 quarter of the dance, and it's stupid. I don't know, I am not at all a dancer.
Anyway, what are your thoughts about this?
Please, please...have someone capture the moment and post it here for the rest of us to see. :)
My teacher is actually filming us, but it's not going to be on YouTube and/or going to send us the video. The only people who are actually going to watch it are the second semester kids.

This has gotten pretty awkward pretty fast.
I was going to suggest another instrumental but Leave that thing alone isn't any better
That was actually my second choice.

It's already set in stone. I picked YYZ because it's an instrumental and I don't think it would be nice to have singing with dancing. I don't know that's just my opinion.

A huge snow storm hit us here in Detroit. About 10 inches of snow and about -20 degrees fahrenheit with windchill. My school was closed for 3 days now. Hopefully it's not closed or any longer because I got finals next week and I need to get my brain working again from winter break.

I think that it's a nice story, even though it's short. I just love listening to the lyrics and imagining the story in my head like a movie.
And yes... the riffs are AMAZING!!!!

Yah. It's been a LOOOOOOOONG time. They have to bring them back.

I sometimes make myself laugh. I just like making stupid quotes. Here's my personal favorite:
"Thou shall honor thy neighbor… unless that neighbor is Ohio."
People from Michigan will understand.

Trust me. TRF is a lot better than other forums I've been on.
For instance, at least there isn't any college drop outs who are heterophobic and still pretend to be 8 years old. (Don't ask me how I got there. I'm gone from that godawful place thankfully)
