Well, HE thinks it is. I think it is too, even though I'm not crazy about that extreme beveled edge. I always liked the shape of those guitars, and the wood and coloring on that one is pretty nice.

As far as how they sound, I've only heard Alex play them through solid state GK amps, and as a tube junkie, that is my least favorite Alex guitar tone. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

To me these guitars are derivatives of derivatives. There is nothing original about them. They are strat types with Kramer/Jackson/Charvel/Explorer headstocks and active pickups. You might as well buy a Fender and modify it. I have always referred to these as "no-tone" guitars because they have no actual tone themselves, it is a manufactured tone, not organic like the guitars these are modeled after.

I used to feel that way about Parker Flies (Fly's?); no-tone. But a friend of mine has one that sounds pretty good.

Why do you think Alex has gone back to Gibsons, Fenders, and even Paul Reed Smiths? Same reason other manufacturers have "borrowed" designs. Because those guitars have flavor and originality. These things are niche, which is fine for guys who are into that. But the only real appeal for these is to Alex Lifeson fans.

But that's me. The burst one is pretty, though.

Well Signatures used a specific type of wood (Limewood) that was only available from a certain area in Quebec. So that is something original about them. The Evans pick-up were somewhat unique. (although I always preferred the Seymour Duncan's they used.)

Yes, Alex did switch to PRS...when Signature went out of business, lol. Of course I realize that he probably would have switched to something else sooner or later. He is constantly changing and using different gear and guitars. But he did use Signatures almost exclusively on two albums and tours. Not bad for a 'no tone' guitar, lol.

Is it a niche guitar? Sure. What exactly is it supposed to be? Alex wasn't the only one who used them, though.

And yes, I realize I am responding to a 6 year old post, but I don't get over here very often. :)

    Here is a cool video:

Actually, Scott Page of post-Waters Pink Floyd used one. You can find their catalog from around 1990 and it listsall of the artists that used them, and there were a few more than Alex

  2. Also, I don't remember anyone saying there were camera crews anywhere else than Toronto, so my guess is this:

    The Anarchist

    Clockwork Angels

    Headlong Flight

    Far Cry

    The Main Monkey Business

    One Little Victory

    Animate

    Roll the Bones

    Distant Early Warning

Losing It (possibly, if not then with extras)

    Subdivisions

    DISC 2

    Tom Sawyer

    Red Barchetta

    The Spirit of Radio

    Jacob's Ladder

    Hemispheres: Prelude

    Cygnus X-1 / drum solo

    Closer to the Heart

    Xanadu

2112: Overture / The Temples of Syrinx / Presentation / Grand Finale

    Lakeside Park

    Anthem

    What You're Doing

Working Man (with final bow from Los Angeles 8/1 which might just be in some behind the scenes bonus thing)

    DISC 2

    How It Is (Toronto 6/19)

Losing It (Toronto 6/19)(see note above)

    Between The Wheels (Toronto 6/19)

    YYZ (Toronto 6/19)

    Natural Science (Toronto 6/19)

  3. In my opinion, the ASOH CD was a beautiful mix, the DVD mix was good, and I really liked most of the filming. I absolutely loved ESL. The filming was good, but the audio was definitely one of the best live albums I have ever heard. Time Machine is one of my favorite DVDs, but the CD wasn't that good in my opinion. SNA was a great CD, as was R30. The DVD counterparts were also good quality. There is one DVD that will always stand out the most for me, though. It is Rush In Rio. I was listening to all kinds of music at the time, and my friend bought the DVD. We watched it, and I loved the band ever since. I listened to them a little bit before that, but that really convinced me that they are the best. I will always love the live album too. Different Stages is another favorite of mine.

    Okay, now for the bad...

P/G seemed so behind it's time with the filming, and I'm not a big fan of that audio mix. The crowd was really loud in it. Clockwork Angels was atrocious. I hated how saturated the color was in the DVD. The crowd sounded bad for some reason, and I think they should have spent a little more time mastering the audio. Everything just sounded bad. However, I will always love having these DVDs no matter how bad they are to me, because it is cool to see the changes since the last one

  4. what happened was Alex's Great White was one of two or three left during the Presto tour (he had a black one with an HSS pickup configuration and I don't know what model it was) and sometime in early May (definitely before the 17th), during a handoff to the technician, the guitar fell and the headstock broke off. At that point, he switched to PRS and got rid of the other one (or two, maybe). The black one was used for The Big Money during the Presto tour before it was dropped from the setlist (see the bootleg 'Available Light'), and he probably gave away his backups.
  5. I remember something happened in the second drum break in The Anarchist and I saw a drum stick fly forward and bounce off the stage, almost as if it was threw like a tomahawk, and in 2012 I remember Alex's guitar stuff broke down and was fixed literally just before the solo in YYZ. Then, a couple months later in Atlantic city, the keyboards were messed up for a couple seconds in Subdivisions, and I also recall guitar problems during YYZ that night, so I've seen my fair share of errors during the shows.
  6. I know the project is shelved for now but a tip on doing a pick guard like that; buy a sheet of acrylic / plexiglass and re-create the pick guard (using a bandsaw and router, or have someone do it for you), and get a sheet of silver foil tape (silver on the sticky side) and apply it to the underside of the plexi rather than on top... If you've got access to the tools you could do it for cheap cheap, and the end product would look nice and last longer than chrome vinyl on the top of the pick guard.

I did this using copper shielding tape on a pick guard for my Squier Stagemaster and even though it wasn't my original intention, it turned out great.

Love that you're using a Squier and aren't a Fender snob... Don't know about the bullet series, but Squiers CAN be great guitars for cheap money.

    Two things:

    1. I am terrible at this, so I'd probably just buy a pickguard.

    2. I bought a Digitech rp-100 at the same time as this, so I kinda had a low budget. I also didn't wanna mess with a Fender. however, if I do an accurate Hentor, I would probably use a Modern Player strat, which are the lowest range strat from Fender. My philosophy is that I'm not gonna go all out money wise on a guitar that's only used exclusively on a few records. If I had enough money, I'd get the Alex Lifeson Les Paul, because he uses it for almost everything.

  7. That kit is gorgeous. I would love to do a replica of a kit like that, but I really don't like the ride cymbal placement anymore. It's been years since I had my ride over that far, and bugs my shoulder a lot (I've tried before recently). Plus my kit is so nicely arranged and I don't wanna mess with it.

Forgot to ask you...do you have any pics of your kit?

I have posted a few about a year ago but will probably post an update tomorrow

  8. Ouch, seems the toggle rout went beyond the pickguard outline!

    Be good to hear it.

Know the feeling, too many guitars, too much building. Same as me. Sometimes it's better to spend more time actually playing them!

Yeah, I accidentally chipped the pain there and then drilled a little more paint off with a hole driller before noticing how far off I was, but it's not really that ban. None of the actual cavity is showing, just lost paint. Also, I think 9 guitars is enough for a while. I am really satisfied with what I have, for the first time in ages. My PRS and the new strat are really fun to play, and I have plenty of range in terms of different sounds. I don't need anything else..

  10. The wiring is finally complete after 3 failed attempts! I will post a diagram soon of the Hentor wiring, which is what I used (for anyone who doesn't know, all 3 of his custom strats from thee early 80's were all wired differently but the Hentor wiring is the only one known by anybody other than Alex).

  11. The strat came today! It's a squier affinity, and my goodness the guitar is amazing. Everyone says you get what you pay for but I have played a few American Standards in my life and have to say I love the neck on this more than the american standards. Anyways, I'm almost done V1 of wiring (it took me 4 attempts over the course of 1 year to correctly wire my doubleneck). The only thing I'm witing on is drilling out a cavity for the 3 way switch and then testing everything out.
