  1. My current finances didn't allow for an amp at the same time, so for now, I practice unplugged and use my guitar amp at lower volume to record.

Ugh, that's rough man. I hate having to play bass without an amp. It just sounds like crap.

    I feel your pain!

Well, I'm happy to say I resolved this issue recently. Invested in a small but serviceable practice amp for now. I'll look at something bigger when I can.

  2. I really like the Rotos on my J bass too. The cost of Cobalts for bass is rather prohibitive with my current budget, so whether or not I try them is debatable. If not, I'll most likely stay Roto. Great strings, and much less costly.
  3. I had cobalt 10's on my strat for a while. Different feeling to get used to at first, but I really came to like them. Definitely seemed to have more power and clarity, at least for me. If my local store had had them in the heavier gauges I've gone back to, I would have bought them again.

When my current RotoSounds go, I may try the Cobalt Bass strings as well.

  4. I love the whole 2112 side, but am partial to Discovery, for its simplicity and sense of wonder at finding this "ancient miracle", a thing that today we all take for granted, just because we are so accustomed to knowing what a guitar is.
  5. Last thing I listen to is critics, and so-called "music experts". Rush is doing just fine with or without the RRHOF. Critics usually ignore what the masses think anyway, so I ignore critics.

And since they pretty much introduced themselves as pop guys, that says it all. Their recognition( lack of) of anything is worthless, IMO.

  6. On my Stratocaster: Heavy gauge D'Addario nickels: .12-.54, occasionally .13-.56

On my Jazz bass: RotoSound Swing stainless steel heavy: .50-.110

  7. Currently rebuilding my collection.

    I have:

    Rush-self titled album

    Caress of Steel

    2112

    Permanent Waves

    Clockwork Angels

    Beyond the Lighted Stage(dvd)

I buy whatever I find, but am most interested in the next one being Moving Pictures.

I eventually plan to have everything I can find.

  8. I love all things Rush, and have several albums, but Clockwork Angels is just kicking my ***. Bought it not too long ago, and it hasn't left my CD player yet. I'm still digesting it and catching something new everytime I listen. And, being a musician myself, I'm listening to it from that perspective as well, contemplating not just the lyrics, but all the nuances of the playing.
  9. I've had quite a few, but usually only one at a time.

First was a salvaged and pieced together Vox Meteor, used extensively in my first real band.

Then, when our bass player and drummer both left us, I traded it for a short scale Fender bass and

    became a bass player.

When we got our bass player back, I traded that bass, ended up with a Japanese Stratocaster clone, played while in that iteration of our band.

Then we all moved away from each other, and I got rid of everything for a while.

Several years ago, I had a couple cheap acoustics and a 72 Telecaster Deluxe clone. No bass.

Sold all that to move, since I didn't want to risk shipping it.

Can't stay away from music long though, so four years ago I bought a Squier pack with a Stratocaster and 15 watt amp. Plus I recently bought a bass as well. I like to maintain my ability to play both.

So now I've decided never again will I dump all my equipment, and I'm working to get back to some serious writing and playing.

  10. I'm new here, so first off, hello all.

When I first started playing bass years ago, I had an old short scale Fender MusicMaster bass, Fender's low end economy model(before Squier took over that role), and a Supro Thunder Bolt tube bass amp.

Unfortunately, it all had to be gotten rid of years ago(moving around too much at the time), and I was away from bass for several years.

Just managed to get a bass back a few weeks ago. It's a long scale Squier Jazz bass, black and white.

I've already begun the modifications to bring the cheaper components up to a better standard.

My current finances didn't allow for an amp at the same time, so for now, I practice unplugged and use my guitar amp at lower volume to record.
