  1. The picture is so different. I feel I need to immerse my self into understanding the various picture settings and when to adjust them. Last night I watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica '78. The series was remastered for BluRay. The space scenes with models and FX look great. The scenes with people on set looked almost live, like video tape, soap opera like. Set pieces are seen in detail unknown to me before, "oh my that is made out of wood"?

You have to turn off the motion smoothing. Type in "how to turn off soap opera effect for" and then whatever your TV model is and you'll have plenty of results. You might want motion smoothing for sports or big action movies, but never for anything where humans are just standing/walking and talking. I never use it, personally.

There are often times in life where I need to hear something many times by different sources. Motion Smoothing is the latest. I need to dig into the settings to turn it off. Thanks.

You're welcome. Every company uses a different term for "motion smoothing", so that's why I suggested the google search above....users all know the problem of the soap opera effect.

  3. What do you get when you have an engineering student with a passion for Rush that is procrastinating on homework?

A large excel spreadsheet ranking each Rush song 1-10 (by Rush standards), and using that to determine my album rankings, and then using that to rank every Rush song from 1-165. I spent too much time on this.

Anyways here's what I ended up with for the albums, and if anyone wants to see the full spreadsheet or my ranking of every Rush song, just let me know.

    Permanent Waves: 9.5

    Hemispheres: 9

    Moving Pictures: 8.71

    A Farewell to Kings: 8

    Signals: 7.63

    Grace Under Pressure: 7.25

    Power Windows: 7.13

    2112: 7

    Clockwork Angels: 6.75

    Vapor Trails: 6.31

    Roll the Bones: 6.3

    Fly By Night: 6.25

    Caress of Steel: 6.2

    Hold Your Fire: 6.1

    Counterparts: 6

    Snakes and Arrows: 5.77

    Presto: 5.55

    Test for Echo: 5.27

    Rush: 4.88

Please don't hate on me too much, for the rankings themselves or that I shared them here.

Your rankings are pretty good except CP is way too high. And RTB too low.

  4. I have a top of the line Panasonic Plasma from 6 years ago, and I find that the low end LEDs look considerably worse.

OLEDs, on the other hand, offer a distinct, but not huge, improvement.

I had a QLED for a while...it was much better than the LEDs, not as good as the OLED (but closer to OLED than LED), and about the same as my Plasma (some things obviously better, some obviously worse).

  5. iPhone X, 256GB on AT&T for me. I’ve been with them since the Cingular days in 1993. Mainly because they are the only service where I live. As far as the iPhone, I’ve had one of those since the second released version (3G, 16GB) mainly because of the iPod functionality in the phone. A phone and an iPod together? Hell yea! That is still the main reason I use an iPhone. I think it’s the coolest thing to carry around 14,000 songs in your pocket!

I have a 256GB iPhone 7 and started with the 3G for the same reason. Plus the pictures. I have about 100 pictures of the 9 years I spent traveling months through many different countries. With my smartphone I have everything I could ever want on virtual film. I’m glad I didn’t have this in college, but it is essential as a father.

  6. Thick or thin, it’s rare that pizza isn’t good to me. It’s when they start adding absurd toppings that I start to turn my nose up.

    What’s “absurd” toppings?

    Tuna.

    Mayo.

    Seaweed.

    Corn.

    Boiled or fried egg.

The smell of tuna mayo seaweed corn egg pizza might as well be bunghole on pizza. Nasty!

How do you survive in Japan, the land of absurd pizza.

  7. God of War. Stunning.

Why did you think it was stunning. I’m a little more than half way through and I just started liking it. The technical and design mistakes really pissed me off for a long time, but the story just got interesting and I’m starting to dig it. But still, the game seems to be tremendously overrated to me.

  8. Ok watched it for a 3rd time last night on Netflix.

Was a little better the third time around.....but I still sit there and cringe at the very same moments I cringed in the first two viewings:

    1. The crank call in the opening scene...pure shit.

    2. The reaction of Luke to Rey handing him the light saber......utter fail.

    3. The storyline between Rose and Finn and just Finn’s lack of story in this film....fail.

    4. The force FaceTime scenes between Rey and Kylo....fail.

Just the utter let’s shit on the past attitude of this film and how Luke was killed off.....fail and utterly anti-climatic.

Still give it a B- as there are some fantastic set pieces and scenes. It is a decent Star Wars film above the first two prequels.....but nothing else. But like I said...I enjoyed it a tad more on this third viewing. And I still sit and wonder after the great TFA what could have been.

Solo blew this film away too.

Surprised Mary Poppins Leia is not on your list.

Leia Poppins didn't bother me so much, and I thought that the Facetime sequences were brilliant. And it even took the edge off of Luke dying as Kylo remarks that Rey couldn't do it as the effort would kill her.

  9. Sonic Adventure 2 with my boy...god the camera is infuriating.

Big sonic fan, not sure about Adventure but I'm really interested to see what Mania is like, mostly good reviews. Also Sonic 4 is slagged a lot but it seems okish, trudging through pt 2 currently.

Mania is probably my favorite Sonic game. It’s everything great about the first 5 (1, 2, 3, K, CD) all together plus more. I don’t know if I have to buy the upgrade or nott, but I will.

  10. Because the guys realized that videos sucked and didn't work for them and the album sucked as well. So why double down on suck?

That was the beginning of the grunge era as well, so they didn't fit that craze.

Except that the album reversed the trend of decreasing sales since Signals, is their most popular post 1984 album, and was more present on the radio than anything after MP. Except for that.

  11. Most of Rush's videos suck why would you have wanted more of them? They never made many videos in the first place and they were never in heavy rotation on MTV so I understand why they didn't bother.

I get that, but the album was a surprise hit and was on the radio constantly.
