  1. QUOTE (Rick N. Backer @ Feb 14 2012, 04:30 PM)
I've been a fan since PeW. The talk about the change in Geddy's voice is funny. I am also a big fan of Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath, since I got into them when Heaven and Hell came out (I'm 44 now, so I was 13 when PeW and H&H came out, for those keeping score at home smile.gif ). I actually saw RJD's second to last show before he died, back in August 2009 at the end of The Devil You Know tour. The show was great, because I love the music, but it's simply not realistic to say that his voice hadn't deteriorated with age. For all you younger folks out there let me assure you of something: EVERYTHING deteriorates with age. laugh.gif Geddy's voice has "deteriorated" as well, if we're talking about the ability to hit all the notes in Temples of Syrinx or Free Will after the lead break. But he still sounds good, frankly much better than Dio sounded, and I saw him almost exactly one year later on the Time Machine tour. For whatever physical reason, a person's voice is going to age more obviously than their dexterity or coordination does, for the most part, so musicians don't show it as badly as singers do. Unfortunately, Geddy is both. If the change in Geddy's voice makes it so you can't enjoy the music live anymore, that's too bad. If the enjoyment of seeing the band live makes it so you don't care that Geddy doesn't sound the same as he did in 1982, that's great. I suspect most of us fall in the latter category.

    Actually, no,

    It's GREAT posting!

Dirk still sounds good. He's not perfect, but how could he be? He's almost 60 years old for cryin' out loud! I personally find that some songs sound really good with his less-than-youthful vocal cords. Others... not so much.

But that doesn't matter because no matter how much people complain, his voice isn't going to miraculously get better. He's going to keep getting older until he retires and there is nothing that anybody can do about it. So either we can accept Ged's voice for what it is (and sometimes isn't) and keep going to see the shows and cheer on the boys, or we can just not accept his voice and stop going. Either way you just can't change time.

  2. I really like this song. I was listening to Roll the Bones a lot while I was in New York and this tune really sends me back to that trip.

I've never heard anybody say anything good/bad/indifferent about The Big Wheel. So, this completely superfluous thread is my tribute to an underrated gem.

I'm just psyched to hear some news!

All I will say is, it better be METAL or there'll be hell to pay!

caravan and bu2b are considered metal?

    yes.gif

    Especially BU2B.

I took my brother to see the Apr/12/11 chicago show and he seemed shocked by that song. He's big into Rage Against the Machine, Korn, that kinda stuff. He got really psyched when he heard BU2B.

another example of how we all hear things differently because bu2b was a bathroom break for me. tongue.gif

    It's all good. new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

I personally think that Caravan and BU2B are the best songs they have put out for quite some time, but that's just my opinion.

I do get why people don't like them, I didn't at first, but they took me a few listens.

    To each, their own. smile.gif

  5. The disappointing part about all of this is that you guys are probably right. The clock is ticking. It's probably gonna just be CA, 2 tours, and retirement. sad.gif

This is highly unfortunate considering that the band is absolutely on fire. Listen to TM once. Ignore the strained vocals. The band sounds great! They're playing tighter then they ever have. I know that not everyone loves Caravan and BU2B, but the general consensus seems to be that they are very good songs musically. I know that's what I think. It sucks that the degradation of Geddy's voice (which was never the focus of the band) might lead to the band calling it quits when they are still perfectly capable of performing incredible instrumental productions.

All I know is that I'll definitely be seeing whatever shows I can.

  6. QUOTE (Presto-a RUSH fan! @ Feb 4 2012, 01:52 AM)
I don't even think I can answer this in the context the OP asks. I think each played a roll in the next, making each important. If they wouldn't have experimented with keyboards, well then so many things change and so on. Each album has it's own "weight" at least to me.

Now if you asked which mattered least to me personally? Damn that is hard, but I'd have to say the debut album. Because honestly, if it weren't for Neil, RUSH would have been a completely different band all together. Not saying they wouldn't have been good or even great, but all together different. So if I had to give one album back, and never have it, it would be the debut. And I like it, but there is no Neil!

The thing about that, if the debut wouldn't have happened then working man would've never been made. That was their break through hit in Cleveland. If it wasn't for that, they wouldn't have gone on tour, they wouldn't have needed to find a new drummer, and they never would've net Neil. There would be no Rush without the debut.

Oh, now I see what you meant. Never mind. laugh.gif

Anything after Power Windows. Possibly Hold Your Fire but any other CD that has too much, i.e. filler, music.

I've always thought that CDs screwed up the quality of albums. Back when an album had 6-8 songs on it, it was pretty easy to make them all pretty good, but now with 12 songs per album it seems like more filler is necessary.

Rush, or any artist, shouldn't feel the need to fill a CD just because they can. Ironically their longest album before HYF was COS at around 45 minutes. I wonder if Rush had tightened that album up to around 40 minutes would there be so many haters for it?

If the modern albums were all tightened to the 40 minute mark I'd have a much higher opinion of said albums. Too many songs feel stretched by a minute or so or are just not good enough to have been released as an individual song. Parts of a few songs could've been turned into one good epic song on each of the modern albums.

    goodpost.gif

    I completely agree.

If Virtuality was cut in half, that song would be in my regular playlist.

  9. I'm going to say Roll the Bones even though I really like that album.

I'm not saying Test for Echo because it showed some forward momentum whereas most of RTB sounded like it could of been on Presto. Otherwise I would've picked T4E.

I don't know how anyone could ever say the debut was unimportant because everything has to start somewhere and if it wasn't for Working Man, we wouldn't have Rush. bacon.gif

I also heard there's an alternate version of "The Trees" in some Rock Band video game.

Yeah, the Vault edition of the Trees from Rock Band 2 is a slightly different version. It's almost identical to the original except some of the parts aren't quite finalized. It sounds like a different take from the same session.

  11. I'll be extremely psyched if they play The Analog Kid, and Between the Sun and Moon.

They basically have to play Limelight, YYZ, TSOR and Tom Sawyer (as nice as it would be to see some of those get a spot of rest)

It would also be nice if they did another Instrumedley of songs that are just too high for Ged (Hemispheres, maybe some bits from the COS epics, etc)

No matter what they play, I'll definitely be going to see it!
