Saw this preview before some movie (Lady in the Water, I think). I honestly laughed to myself over the concept. If this is what originality is, I'd rather have remakes of exciting movies. But I do like Ridley and Crowe, I just think that a movie about whether a guy keeps or sells a winery is funny.

Oh good god, I work at a Six Flags (rights to Looney Tunes, all that jazz)...

 

The enterance to the staff area is through the Looney Tunes park, so I hear this stuff every day. Also, having people in the character suits walk past you while you're eating mac-and-cheese for lunch is a little surreal.

I write. A lot. Most of my writings are screenplays, then novels, then short stories, in that order.

 

But what am I getting published for?

 

Poetry.

 

On a whim, I saw poetry.com was having a contest, and I decided to enter. Honestly, with no thought in it, I made a short 70ish word poem, and entered. I read it after I entered, and thought it was beyond cheesy, and very cliche. But I guess, not only did I advance to the semi finals with 103 other people, but I'm being published in their next hardcover collection of poetry. One cool thing- it is a collection, meaning I still own the rights to it. Anywho, I may have 1,000 dollars in a few weeks- fingers crossed.

We become blinded by the light

Though I don't know the technical differences, I do know though I could play Gibson, I play Epiphone. When I play guitar (which has become rare lately) I go for my Epiphone Firebird, which I love.

I just got back, and all I can say is wow. This is an amazing movie. Like I said, I went into this knowing the plotline of the movie, and was still blown away. The fact that M. Night could completely create his own mythology and create a seperate story around it in the span of 2 hours is amazing to me. Again, I reinforce the fact that this is NOT a thriller. I would categorize it as a drama/comedy/thriller, in that order. And yes, it is a comedy, above the point of simple comedic relief. I rarely laugh out loud at movies, but the opening scene and every time the critic talked had me laughing.

 

One thing I noticed is that M. Night wrote himself into this much more then his brief cameos before. And honestly, he's not too shabby of an actor. And then there's Mr. Giamatti. Honestly, he is one of my favorite actors of today. He gave an amazing performance in this movie. He was passionate, and his delivery (a major plot point in this movie is his stutter) was on point. Also Jeffery Wright and Bob Balaban, though both were given limited screen time, both gave amazing performances.

 

The storyline in general is strictly linear, compared to other offering from M. Night. There's many small twists and roll-reversals, but overall, it's a linear movie. And honestly, if M. Night attempted to put spins in it like his others, it wouldn't have worked.

 

Honestly my favorite M. Night movie, because it hit me harder emotionally then any of the others.

I know the ending to it. I have a feeling for some reason you'll like it goobs. I didn't know you were an M. Night fan, actually. But the spin in the movie is pretty cool. Let me just say, not really a thriller. It's kind of... uplifting, I guess? The underlying message is, at least.

Infinitely better then the first one. I liked the first one, but it wouldn't touch my top 50 movies of all time. Maybe a 7/10. This one, on the other hand, could definitely find its way into my top 50.

 

This sequel had a much darker and most likely more realistic take on pirating. Not as bright and friendly, more greed and anger showing. The CGI was done beautifully, but got a little out of hand at times. The directing style was much better then the first, I think.

 

And then there's Johnny Depp. I honestly can't think of many better characters that he's done then Jack Sparrow. As the drunken, slightly feminine, Keith Richards-esque (Depp's words, not mine) pirate, he gives a hilarious performance.

 

Overall, 8/10

I can't say I ever have, and honestly, I'm not hard to please. I've seen some of the movies that are frequently rated the worst of all time, and I watched it all the way through. Even utterly terrible movies that I've gone to, I won't even go to the bathroom during. I'm just a fan of the craft, no matter how bad it is.

 

Actually, right as I was going to post, I thought of something- The only movie I didn't watch for a long time, after watching the first 40 minutes was Requiem for a Dream. I didn't even touch the movie for a good 2 years. I then attempted to watch it again- it's now my 6th favorite movie of all time.

Are you planning on going HD-DVD? I think Blu-Ray is far superior in all aspects. Bigger disc size (HD-DVD is 15 GB single layer, 30 double, while Blu-Ray is 25 single, 50 double) and it has more studio support. Universal is the only studio that is only going with HD-DVD, while Sony, MGM, Buena Vista, 20th Century Fox, and I believe one other I can't remember is going to be strictly Blu-Ray. All others will put out versions for both, until one goes the way of Beta. Unless all you get is Universal, go with HD-DVD, but unless that's the case, Blu-Ray is the way to go.

With Blu-Ray and HD DVD coming this year, and with the main switch from DVD to the new generation stuff, you're not exactly looking for a long life from a dvd player anymore.

 

 

 

(Oh, and when that happens, go Blu-Ray!)

If Jack Black wasn't in it, it wouldn't have been good. The dialogue was to be expected from Mr. White, as that's his "thing," now that he did Napoleon. There were some parts I laughed at, but not much. The only thought I had running through my head at many parts is- if John Waters made a kid movie, it would be this. Especially the big girl crawling through the tunnels. That's soooo John Waters-ish.

 

 

Overall- 5/10
