Try to play to Resist.

Not the biggest kit, but different...That a pretty cool set.
Ever try playing with just that set up of a snare, bass and floor tom? It's quite different, but really interesting.
yeah i have, you get alotta wierd groove things going on jus cuz u really have no other way to make the parts interesting, also it makes ur crossovers amazing.

QUOTE (CygnusX-1Bk2 @ Apr 25 2005, 01:08 PM) Now now. Each of those toms is tuned to a specific pitch and Terry performs "Solo Drum Music" on this kit. It is quite impressive to watch. The melodies and rhythms he plays are very meditative. Yeah, maybe you should see him play before you say things, Terry Bozzio is an amazing drummer, and he plays the f**k out of that kit. So no more jokes about him. Open your minds to other things.

If Neil played double bass more it wouldn't be Neil. He uses double bass for fills only there are obviously some exeptions (One Little Victory), but is he used it any more I don't think I'd enjoy his playing as much.

The guitarist for The Mars Volta.
-
One of my favorite movies ever.
-
I think I've seen him compare himself to Neil once.
-
I know Mike isn't Neil, I wouldn't like him if he was, why would we need two Neil's or someone trying to be him? I like Mike because he is original, he has his own sound, even though some think otherwise....
BTW ---- Rush still does and ALWAYS will rock.
-
I agree that sometimes the solos can be over-the-top but I mean it's the nature of the band, but if you don't like what the band plays why would that make Mike Portnoy overrated? If you don't LIKE thier music I couldn't care less, but you don't have to take away from the musicians in the band.

QUOTE (D-13 @ Feb 27 2005, 02:09 PM) QUOTE (yyz @ Feb 27 2005, 10:31 AM) QUOTE (spirit of radio @ Feb 23 2005, 09:25 AM) QUOTE (JoDay @ Feb 23 2005, 08:16 AM) Here's the quote I promised you, it's from Drum! # 99 (July/August 2004 Special Progressive Rock Drumming Issue), p. 69 :
Mike Portnoy:
... The Rushes and the Yeses of music have the stigma of being very sterile and very stiff live, and I wanted to make sure I always had that Lars Ulrich / Keith Moon mentality where I'm able to play accurately and technically, but also play with the balls and the adrenaline of an entertainer...
Earlier on p. 62:
...I've always been slightly turned off that most of my favourite bands kind of lost their intensity as they got further into their career - mainly progressive bands. The Rushes, the Yeses and Genesis, they all kind of softened up...
(How many Rushes and Yeses are there? And how does Vapor Trails count if we are speaking about the supposed 'softening up'?!)
No more comments, just let everyone judge Mike by his words, now
we've passed judgement by his deeds.
PS In case somebody missed out on this, this issue of Drum! is worth getting cuz it's got Neil everywhere. On both covers, for instance And they also test his signature cymbals.Mike Portnoy couldn't carry Neil Pearts sneakers to the stage.
Mike sounds dillusional. argh
so true....
How can you f*cking say that!? He is a really good drummer...i'm sorry but sure Neil is really good and is one of the best...but why does everyone have to compare him to everyone else!? I know this is a Rush forum and all that, and i'm not saying that Neil is not the best out there or anything but how can you say Mike is a bad drummer? like honestly. I wonder how many people have actaully listened to their albums here.... Dream Theater friggin kicks arse!
Thank you, you are my new hero...

I can't belive the things some people have said about Portnoy, who is one of my idols.
He's actually an amazing drummer but whatever different strokes....

Steve Vai - April 2nd at Massey Hall in Toronto.
I can't wait to see him.

I feel that setting your kit or getting the same guitar or whatever like your favorite artist is fine. As you long as don't play like them or try to play like them it doesnt matter.

Jacobs Ladder hands down.

Neil's old Zildjian crashes were custom. They were the rock crash but instead of Medium-Heavy they were just medium.
I have the Paragons, well most of them and they sound great I'd recomend them to just about anyone who plays rock music,

I can do the 3/4 boom boom chick, boom boom chick etc.
I can play what's on top, but stick them together and my brain fries!
I've even tried to incorporate the 3/4 into the top solo, as syncopation, and it just doesn't work!
It's two seperate things entirely!
Well then I guess Zappa's 'Black Page' is out of the question!
Yea man. Separation is something I never even approached while playing. Singing and playing at the same time was the closest I ever got. There's bound to be some 'rudiment' type exercise that can help with it.
Come on all you drummers. What's the exercise this guy needs?
Practice, practice, practice. That's all I can tell you. Watch Anatomy Of A Drum Solo too, that will help.
