  1. Entre Nous and Different Strings keep Permanent Waves from beating Power Windows for me. I love both songs, but Power Windows is Rush's most concise effort to this day without a doubt. Still not surprised with the results other than Counterparts getting beat out by Power Windows.
  2. lel how are these albums even comparable? Hard Rock, Progressive, Neo-Prog/New Wave, Alternative/Soft Rock, and well the sonically bombast Vapor Trails which is "Rock" I guess.

I picked Signals since synths are my fav.

  3. Kinda assumed the big 3. You guys are so cliche. I mean really 2112, Xanadu & La Villa? :eyeroll:

They left the 70s behind for a reason. It was a choice. If the question is referring to composition, then Hemispheres takes the progressive epic cake easy. This question really shouldn't even exist in this form.

  4. I changed my vote. I will have to PASS on my old favorite, and commit heresy (wrong album I know) and go with Available Light. Show Don't Tell is probably the best in actuality. Dat bass solo.
  5. I'll just be content with my copy of it. The "clipping" doesn't bother me. It makes the music that much grittier.

    :goodone:

Basically this. I really think by "restoring it" they will just take away what partially makes the music so powerful. I don't want S&A mastered VT... it would ruin it.

  6. It's not Geddy's band :P Alex is the founding member.

All the hit singles listed are the lulz

I would think the list would go more Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio, Limelight, and Closer to the Heart

  7. Dang people hate Virtuality... The lyrics are fun tongue.gif

    01. Totem

    02. Virtuality

    03. Half the World

    04. Time and Motion

    05. Limbo

    06. Test For Echo

    07. Driven

    08. Resist

    09. Dog Years

    10. Carve Away the Stone

    11. Color of Right

TBH, I've listened to this album quite a bit, and I skip the last 2 EVERY time. I just can't get into that sound at all. I made an exception for Half the World and Dog Years (the latter because it's good fun).

Needless to say Wish Them Well & Seven Cities of Gold on CA aren't my cup of tea either, since they sound like the songs I don't like here, but that's a story for another thread. Totem just flows really well to me and I think it's one of their catchier songs. I really like the lyrics in it actually. Virtuality is just Rush rocking out, and I find it to me the most memorable of the pack TBH other than the Tom Sawyer of the album (Driven) or the 'it must be good because it's slow' Resist. Limbo, while not being one of their strongest instrumentals, is still a Rush instrumental. All Rush instrumentals are awesome. I think the Transylvania Twist part is what really turns people off besides it does seem to drag some. Time & Motion, in my opinion, picked up where Double Agent from CP left off and lead to songs like Spindrift on S&A. Test For Echo the song just seems like not as good Show Don't Tell, but that's just me.

I'll give Carve Away the Stone and Color of Right a chance the same day I give Wish Them Well and Seven Cities of Gold a chance. That day may never come. It still doesn't change the fact that I love every Rush album though 1022.gif

Maybe it's just me, but I've listened to S&A many times. Sure it was Rush playing new Rush music, it will obviously sound like Rush...

But, I just keep finding bits and pieces of old songs or odd references in CA that are just so...odd/obvious/up front.

If I tried to list them all, I'm sure half of you would quickly point out ones that I miss, so I'll just throw it out there - what have you heard or wondered about?

    Like:

The obvious Bastille Day riff in HF - but I also heard some Bytor licks at the end of the HF solo

The lenses inside of me paint the world black; the pools of poison, the scarlet mist (Red Lenses? War Paint).

The closeness of the WTW argeggio with Carve Away the Stone

Coincidences? No way to not self reference? I only wonder because I just didn't hear so much old bits in VT or S&A...wonder if the music is a retrospective much like the story is a life story?

Or, I could just be donning my Captain Obvious cape again  smile.gif

    Maybe they're just lacking in creativity tongue.gif laugh.gif cool.gif

I try not to over analyze it so I don't notice it ohmy.gif

  9. POWER Windows. My name kinda gives away that I like it a lot wink.gif

    song vs song

    Big Money > Subdivisions

Grand Designs > The Analog Kid (though all biased aside, they're equal)

    Chemistry > Manhattan Project

    Marathon > Digital Man

    The Weapon > Territories

Middletown Dreams > New World Man

    Losing It > Emotion Detector

    Mystic Rhythms > Countdown

    5-3 for me.

I feel like PoW is just more consistent as an album, and having the theme of power sounds cool, as does all the powerful synth behind it. Signals sounds... dated to me wacko.gif I know, I know, shoot if you must. I've never been into New World Man (they threw it together in like 5 minutes and it's just way too simple and poppy for me) or Subdivisions (idk if people are attached to this song because it was relate able to them during the albums heyday or what. I'm 22 so Presto is older than me xD) but that isn't to say I love everything on PoW. Manhattan Project has just slipped away from me for some reason, and it really feels like it drags sometimes (on the album. ASoH is a different story. The buildings blowing up while Neil is banging away is f***ing awesome).

Top songs for me from both albums would be

Signals - Chemistry, Digital Man, The Weapon

Power Windows - Grand Designs, Marathon, Big Money

I see a lot of people saying they like the darker sound, which is weird since OP said nobody really liked GUP, which is definitely one of the darkest ones in their catalog (Red Sector A, After Image, Between the Wheels, etc.)

I was going to go on, but I feel like I'm ranting.

  10. It was a tough choice for me between The Pass & Bravado... but I just had to go with The Pass. Now if it was Bravado live or The Pass, my vote would be different biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, The Garden. Overrated... big time. Don't get me wrong, it's a really good song, but people are letting modern polish etc. get in the way I think. The Pass and Bravado are from albums a lot of people consider to not have balls, and people just can't seem to get around production.

His guitar work on CA shines through his riffs.  The opening riff in carnies is the best riff he's done since Ghost of a Chance IMO. 7COG also stands out.

carnies blows away ghost of a chance. 062802puke_prv.gif

  12. Limbo just always gets overlooked sad.gif it's very tragic. I actually have A REALLY hard time ranking the instrumentals, but my gut always puts La Villa at #1 even though it isn't my favourite. Honestly, Part IV of the Gangster of Boats Trilogy has to be it for me wink.gif especially a live version of it. Has anyone tried listening to the instrumentals backwards minus MalNar? They kinda flow...minus the fact that they're all produced differently and what not.

    1. Main Monkey Business

    2. Limbo

    3. Leave That Thing Alone

    4. Where's My Thing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLyHMhQetoU Mirrors Soundboard. Where's My Thing?

There are 3 LIVE limbo soundboards, Technically 6 if you could scanners.

Echoes on the Stage (Rehersal Soundboard) Bigger, and Better in Texas (Soundboard) Black Ice (Scanner, Tampa) Great Woods, and Summer Skies (Soundboard, Not great, like some people think. I find it to be much too distant.) and Toronto 1997 (Scanner)

Mirrors is such a good SB. I have my old computer in the garage, but I was able to get a lot of the boots from the different stages part of TRF as well as other places. I need to get them off of there and maybe upload them to mediafire or something and hit up that area of the site to help restore it to it's former glory. MU shutting down pretty much decimated it.
