  2. Here, I will settle this debate.

Tom Cruise's beliefs in scientology and life has decreased his acting skills detrementally. I will not watch any Tom Cruise movie anymore until he stops making monologues in the middle of a movie like War Of The Worlds about not taking pills for depression or shouting out the nutritional value of Katie Holme's placenta to people standing around him while hes running away from something in MI:3. It is a well known fact that if you believe in something that someone else doesnt believe in, it makes you a bad actor as you are seen as silly to the person watching.

If he continues to speak his mind about his opinions on scientology, I fear his older movies will be infected with this curse of bad acting.

This is too bizarre. Keep in mind the source, though.

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2006170680,00.html

This was a sound clip taken from an interview he did last week, where he was intentionally being sarcastic. It was quite obvious in his tone that he was answerin a completely rediculous question with a completely rediculous answer, but of course thats all something like The Sun needs to make headline news.

I still think hes completely insane though, whether or not The Sun took what he said out of context.

  4. Its been a while since I've reviewed a show, but 2 nights ago I went to see Thomas Dolby at the Independent in San Francisco and it was easily the best show I have seen in the last half a year. All 3 acts were beyond words, those being Thomas Dolby, and the 2 San Francisco based openers, The Genie and Loop!Station. The first act, The Genie, is a young 20's, self proclaimed pioneer of the scratch guitar genre. He spent the majority of his time blending hip hop elements and pink floyd epic scale guitar chords, building each of the layers of his songs literally from scratch. What he would do is play a few measures of a guitar part, and then loop it over and over while he recorded another layer, until the final product was one in which it sounded like a band of 10 people were on stage. He would then tweak with the loops by compressing and expanding them, skipping and rewinding them to add to the song. It was quite a remarkable thing, and proving that you dont need a full band or anyone else really to develop the music you want.

The real highlight of the show for me though was Loop!Station. This band consists of nothing more then one man on the cello and a girl with the most amazing voice I have ever heard. They made use of the same loop effect that The Genie had, building layers of cello and vocal arrangements upon eachother to quite grandios scales. The music is very much rooted in jazz and soul, but is done with such emotional intensity, you cant help but get swept away. I have a feeling this is going to be my next favorite band. And with the use of the loop effect, they sounded as if an entire string ensemble and chorus of singers were joining them onstage, which created some very powerful sounds. Of course I had to immediatly go to thier vendor and buy their cd.

Then comes the main attraction, Thomas Dolby. I had seen his first show at the Red Devil lounge last January (which I gave another mini review of earlier in this thread) and his setlist was pretty much the same, with a couple new inclusions. This show though he seemed much more at ease being on stage infront of people playing music, the show I had seen him at before was his first solo show in 25 years, and since then he has had about a dozen solo shows under his belt. For this show he interacted much more with the crowd, telling the stories for how he came to write the songs he played. Even fulfilling a promise that if his equipment (who the makers of were in attendance at the show) failed more then twice in his show, he would throw out free t-shirts. What was really cool was this one camera he had attached to his glasses, so on the screen, you could actually see what he was seeing, and watch as he played with the synthesizers. The highlights of the show were his performances of Leipzig, I Live In A Suitcase, and a version of Hyperactive that was built from the ground up in the same fashion that the 2 openers had done.

Dolby was actually the first artist I have seen to build the music by himself with loops in this fashion last January, and since that show I have now seen half a dozen other acts do the same thing. I wonder if this is going to be a new trend for solo musicians, who are finding ways to expand the sound one person can do with the advent of technology. We will see in the years to come, but if it is, it makes for one incredible live show.

  5. Speaking of Beatles ripoffs, the song "Look What You've Done" by Jet has the exact same introduction as "Golden Slumbers" off Abbey Road. Its such a disappointment whenever that song comes on the radio, I think I'm gonna get a rare Beatles track, but instead I get that one.

Trying to go to VailHalen this week on the thursday...I have to see if my friend can go...either that or a film festival. Next up after that...Hawksley Workman with Sarah Harmer on the 8th...and later thats coming up I want to go to Chad Vangaalen on the 30th of May...

Just wish I had more music friends!

Cool group of shows, yeah I wish I had some more music friends down here as well. I have a few that like the newer stuff, but they are all the groupie type, so its kinda weird being there when 3 of em are talking about some group of cute guys that look english on the other side of the room.

  7. Ohh thats right, I have a few shows I'm going to this month. Not a big month like March, but theres a few.

    4/15 - Thomas Dolby @ The Independent

    4/28 - Hard Fi/ The Rakes @ Slim's

    4/29 - The Editors/ stellastarr* @ Mezzanine

hmm, my thread was removed ? confused13.gif well anyway the show last night was awesome and there was a rush medley of sorts. (dont feel like explaining it again.)

No offense tick, I moved it to the concert review section as thats what it was. There are a lot of people who complain about Dream Theater, and to try to minimize that, I merge any multiple DT threads into this one, or into another thread if the topic deserves to be moved there. Just trying to keep the redudency level to a minimum smile.gif

  10. Got to see almost every band I wanted this month, but there are still a few more thanks to Noisepop going on.

Tonight its The Herms, Citizens Here And Abroad @ The Fillmore

Tomorrow its Film School, The Cloud Room, Birdmonster @ Slim's

Saturday its The Helio Sequence, Band Of Horses, Halou @ Mezzanine

and I havent decided yet on a sunday show, but Im thinking I should probably take that day off and get some homework done, lol.
