8 Tracks Anyone?

Seeing the Van Halen 8 Track brings back a very funny memory ( which I probably told here a dozen times )

Back in 1978, I heard You Really Got Me on the radio and loved it - so my Dad takes the family to Two Guys ( big dept store here in NJ in the 70s ) and he buys me the Van Halen 8 Track which had just been released ..

So I get home, pop the 8 Track in, and by the time the 2nd song comes around, I am perplexed - something is wrong with the tape - it must be the tape speeding up or warped tape falling off the spools or something ..

I tell my Dad, and we go back to Two Guys and exchange the "defective" 8 Track for the record

When I get home, the 2nd song sounds the same on the LP as it did on tape

And that was my introduction to "Eruption"

You needed to be familiar with the sound effects on the TV show, "Lost In Space" from the mid sixties in order to get that sound they get on the begining of that song! It's almost exactly the sound they used to use for the 'Jupiter 2' taking off or landing.

The sound is about half way through that video, and sounds like a trio of car horns being 'bent up and down' or, just listen to "Eruption" by Van Halen.....lol

JD, here you go: http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?/topic/88133-photography-thread/page__st__660#entry4097330

If you like Yes, maybe you can negotiate a deal with Custom.

I found the perfect tape for my new toy. A K-tel "The Rock Album" compilation album from 1980. Couldn't resist a K-tel release! Also got Kansas Leftoverture. Haven't decided on a Rush tape yet.

I remember the first K-Tel album I got, and it was a rock compilation of '70-'71 and included the song "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" by Three Dog Night And "Let It Rain" by Clapton but those are the only two songs I remember. Now that I've read up on a couple blogs and such on the web, I would HATE to have that album again! I'm a DAMN AUDIOPHILE! I'm glad I only bought one of those 'things'....

I sure don't intend to do any "serious" listening through the 8 track player. It's just fun. Besides, the K-tel tape was only $2.00. First K-tel release I've ever owned. It just fits that it's on 8 track.

I still believe 8 track system is THE STUPIDEST tape delivery system invented for commercial use. It's great for radio stations, for commercials, bits, call letter inserts, etc. but for music lovers, it's TOO STUPID. interuptions, etc. The 8-Track is probably my first venture into CURMUDGEONALITY. I wanted to take the damned thing out back and SHOOT IT TO DEATH!!!

Besides the mid-song fade-out problem, they would sometimes change the track order for time balance reasons. Check out Boston's classic debut album, 8-track version:

A1 More Than A Feeling

A2 Let Me Take You Home Tonight

B1 Peace Of Mind

B2 Smokin'

C1 Rock & Roll Band

C2 Something About You

C3 Hitch A Ride (Part 1)

D1 Hitch A Ride (Conclusion)

D2 Foreplay/Long Time

Oh, I 'get' it, but on those blogs, I learnt that not only did they sometimes 'limit' the songs to 2:30 sec, they pressed the albums with the grooves so thin it ruined the fidelity of the playback horribly! I can only guess on what they did to freaking 8 Tracks to limit their cost of production.....

The record companies did that with cassettes also. I noticed the difference when a friend of mine had the original MONTROSE album on cassette and I bought it on vinyl album. I like the way the group arranged the songs on the vinyl better...

A lot of 8 tracks are like that. Kansas Leftoverture and Aerosmith Get Your Wings both have a very different playing order. So does Moving Pictures.

One of many reasons that it's a horrible format.

I'd still take an 8-track over a regular pre-recorded cassette.

I loved when a killer guitar lead faded out in mid stream and continued on another track. That was the best. :guitar:

I believe that was the FIRST time I used an 8-Track tape for target practice with my .44 magnum....."Go ahead! Make my day, tape!"
