Wot? A Flower? TRF's Garunteed Eternal GENESIS THREAD!

Recommended Posts

I like Phil Genesis more than Peter Genesis.

Me, too.

What album is best to try with Phil up front? Like...I've heard most but none stood out to me to play twice. I would take just one and play it more than once.

A Trick of the Tail for overall prog.

Duke for prog into pop.

These and Abacab are gems. I can't go on a Phil-Genesis 3-album listening run and feel energized. A similar run of Gabriel-Genesis leaves me fatigued. The Gabriel era brilliant moments are brilliant-er, but as a whole I find prolonged listening a bit tedious. That's true for a lot of early 70s prog, actually.

This pretty much sums up my opinion. Energized is a great way to describe it.

Phil is still my fav drummer of all time.

his duets with Chester back in the day are literally the only drum solo's that don't bore me to death.

Mick

Thats nuts. The drum duets are great

to each their own

lol. i said their the only solo's that DON'T bore me to death.

i couldn't get into genesis for years. and they were a band i wanted badly to like.

now they rank over yes And most certainly ELP.

ELP aren't all hits...I would say I truly love two records and the rest I can live without.

that's my thoughts. i think their really ranked high because of a couple of albums......as they should be. but as a whole they're discography is really not that special.

I can hear what makes them special, but like Genesis I find them a bit...airy fairy...yeah that is an amazing explanation I know haha

Genesis have taken a while to hit me too, but I've really been getting into them lately enough to justify them being a possible fourth or fifth favorite band. I agree with Mick about Supper's Ready. I didn't get it at all at first, didn't even like it much. Now every time I listen to it is mesmerizing and emotional. I mostly changed after I gave it a second chance and read some slight explainations of the lyrics online.

Here's my rankings of both eras cause they are like 2 different bands.

Gabriel.

1. Foxtrot

2. Selling England by the Pound

4. The lamb Lies Down On Broadway (though i really only enjoy disc 1)

5. Trespass

6. From Genesis to Revelation

Collins

1. A Trick of the Tail

2. Duke

3. Abacab

4. Wind & Wuthering

5. Genesis

6. Invisible Touch

7. We Can't Dance

8. And Then there Were Three

Cool list! I haven't gotten even halfway through their discography yet I don't think, but here's my current temporary ranking (both eras for convenience):

Foxtrot

Nursery Cryme

(So)

Duke

Wind And Wuthering

Selling England By The Pound

We Can't Dance

I agree with Mick there except I really do enjoy most of Lamb and rank SEBTP highest among the early ones.

i really do enjoy Disc 1. Disc 2 isn't bad per se. just drags for me a bit.

Selling England is amazing though.

I've get some mixed feelings about SEBTP. On one hand, it sounds absolutely brilliant and has extremely masterful playing, but most of the songs don't capture me the way they do on Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme. They all start out great but most seem to kind of go nowhere. But I'll give it a few more close listens and wait for some other shred of brilliance jump out at me.

Have you heard rhe Lamb sessions cd? There are about 4 of them and they rehearse sections of the album going in and out of each other. Pretty cool stuff.

Charlie has the wrong disposition to remind me of Phil. On the other hand, this guy...
