The Gush Over Rush Thread

The Garden will always be one of my favourite Rush songs, and as Eaglemoon pointed out the graphics in the live version are genuinely stunning, but I don't really like the live version of the song if I'm being completely honest. The vocals at times aren't the best. Feel free to smite me!

Whoops, that video was from the first night and I went to the second Toronto show.

Post the one from that night too! :)

I didn't see one for the second Toronto show.

But I did find one from the show I saw here a week before that.

I think Eagle was at that show too if I'm not mistaken.

Has anyone here ever almost cried when they first come on stage? I'm asking because it is always a dramatic moment when I watch the bootleg videos (they seem to capture that moment better than anything professional) often my eyes fill up with tears at that moment.

I got pretty emotional at my first show on the CP tour. 14th row, and it was like a dream world. Very surreal. Didn't tear up but was on a crazy high from the moment the show started. I did get weirdly emotional during the CA tour, at the show in Atlanta, during the song Clockwork Angels. It just hit me... they were nailing that song, and although I had seen them a few times before, that night I got chills again from the music. My eyes teared up a little for sure.

The same thing happened to me the second time I saw them on the CA tour. They were playing a beautiful version of The Wreckers and the second time they hit the chorus my eyes watered up a bit. I don't know what the hell happened? I guess their performance just hit me really hard right there.

I didn't cry, but I may have peed a little from excitement the first time I saw them. I was like one of those little young dogs that sometimes pee when they get excited.

I'm gazing at Seven Cities of Gold!

For the story behind it, the feeling, the intruments, beautiful lyrics... everything!!

Bass and guitar lines are impeccable. Guitars prevail mostly here. Great work, Alex Lifeson!! :Alex:

 The instrumental part at 4:05 is a complete power trio solo!!

Rush are one of those bands where I find myself thinking I am bored with them, but after weeks of not playing anything I pick one album and then somehow end up playing ALL OF THEM.

You describe a feature among many to make Rush what and who they are. :rush:

I did cry when I first saw them. It lasted three emotive minutes. The first song they played was Tom Sawyer.

It was an interesting positive vibe.

My wife cannot listen to this song, and this is her favorite Rush album. It holds strong memories for us both, but I have managed to overcome them in order to appreciate this track. For her, it is a song she cannot bear to hear. Around the time that the album came out, my step dad passed away. And so for some time we associated this song with his passing and neither of us would listen to it.

As the next couple of years went by, I was able to listen again, although I only did so sporadically, and never around her, as she would start crying every time it came on. Of course, we heard the song when we saw the band on the CA Tour, and she was able to keep it together at the shows.

Then in December her father had a heart attack and died. Four months later, her mother passed away from the effects of dementia. Now more than ever this song - even if she will not listen to it - stands as a permanent reminder of their passing. She said that she doesn't know if she will ever be able to listen to it. And she considers it one of their best songs. When we listen to CA, we stop after Headlong Flight. She won't go beyond that, although from time to time she will spin Wish Them Well.

Now, even though the song doesn't affect me in the same way it does her, I rarely listen anymore, because now I associate it with her grief.

In time, she will be able to listen to it. If she never does, she will never heal correctly.

The same thing happened to me in 1971/72. It took me eight years to be able to listen to Seventh Sojourn and Harvest - both albums reminded me of the sudden death of both my father and grandfather within three months of each other. I thought I had healed, but it wasn't a total healing. The wound had to be ripped opened again for it to be healed properly.

I feel for your wife very deeply. Emotional pain and wounds are the worst. A huge hug for her. :hug2:

As for The Garden, there's something about that song that not even I can get through it without choking up, especially towards the end, when Geddy sings out for the last time "a garden to nurture and protect." The way he sings that line for the last time chokes me up bad, and then the music that follows does me in.

Thank you Lorraine! Hugs to you too. I feel like eventually I will be able to listen to this song. It is one of the best songs ever written IMO. Rush has a lot of songs that touch me very deeply but none as much as this one.

The song will still be there when you think you are ready. :) :hug2:

I haven't been on in a while but my husband Wil1972 post quite often. He told me about this thread and so I felt the need to post on the GUSH thread. So here goes, and please forgive me if it seems quite long. I have always known/heard Rush growing up. I only had access to their hits because we didn't have a lot of money and so I just had standard TV stations, no internet and standard radio stations (we ALL know that Rush was not in the mainstream media, sooooo). My husband and I got together in 2010. We had not been together long when he started slowly introducing Rush to me. Once we had gotten through all of their albums, videos and history I immediately felt robbed!! Where had these guys been all my life? I needed them so much growing up. The Pass, Subdivisions, Stick it Out, One Little Victory....I could go on and on and on!! I will also admit (I know all of you old school Rush fans will disagree with me) but VT is my favorite. When I heard it for the first time, it stuck with me. I didn't know the history behind it or anything. I got past the production because I am a lyric lady. Anywho, I say all this to just say that Rush means a lot to so many people on different levels. I listen to them on a daily basis because they make my heart and soul happy. So I am terribly sad now that they are retiring from live performances. Again, I feel robbed but at the same time, blessed to have found them when I did.

I have no bootlegs to speak of. I have a few snippets of a few things that are pretty common, like the St Louis 1980 show, the 1974 ABC Cleveland show. But all of that is being semi-officially released through not so official channels. But 99% of my collection is official releases.

Why don't you put your name on the list for the hard drive? You won't be sorry, and your wife will have loads of old Rush concerts to watch and/or listen to.

There's a lot of stuff on Youtube too. :)
