Geddy on Xanadu: Why not just use a guitar on a stand?

Given the incredibly short amount of time that Geddy plays guitar on Xanadu (couple minutes at most?), I find it odd that he chose to bear the weight of the bass/guitar combo through the entire song just for a flash in the pan use of the guitar right at the end of the song. Wouldn't it be more practical (and comfortable) just to have had one of Alex's guitars on a stand ready for him at the right moment?

I don't quite think that an electric can fit on a stand meant for an acoustic that well. And all the stands I've seen for sale are meant for acoustics. I haven't really seen one that can accommodate an electric.

Music is just one part of the experience .. Back in the 70s, the band, as much as they may not admit it, was projecting a great image ..

Sure, it took some time as they went thru an evolutionary period both in terms of their sound and their image and persona, but as much as David Bowie was Ziggy Stardust and Paul Frehley was Space Ace, the members of Rush were becoming larger than life personalities on stage ..

Cause the doublenecks are ROCK AND ROLL!

What's that about Alex having an accident with his Gibson? I haven't heard about that before.

In one of the tour books, possibly GUP, he says that an elephant sat on his doubleneck and broke it.

In all seriousness, this is what Wikipedia has to say about it:

"Alex first bought a cherry 1976 EDS-1275, in Nashville, TN at the end of the 2112 tour. It was modified with an after market tune-o-matic bridge on the six string, and an especially designed bridge for the twelve string for intonation. In 1978, during the 'Hemispheres' tour, the guitar was broken when a speaker horn fell on it, in Uniondale, NY. Gibson later repaired it and repainted it Alpine White; he continued to use it until the 'Signals' Tour (1982–1983) when it was retired."

Awesome. Now he just need to play one of those guitars with a violin, and that'll be as rock 'n' roll as you can get

I always assumed the elephant line was a reference to long epic songs like Xanadu becoming white elephants to them at the time.

Yeah easy answer to this. He used it because it looked cool. People used to look forward to the part of the show where they pulled out the doublenecks. I know I did. Plus when they used them on Xanadu that was such an iconic song.

The double neck guitar in any combination 6,12 string, bass 6 string is the 1970 Charger of guitars . It just looks too damn cool not to use. I mean look at that photo above ! You can't deny it !

Yes, far more practical, but nearly as cool-looking.

Yes, to all the comments about coolness and all that, but one more consideration, is that back in the AFTK Tour days, they played on stages that were a lot smaller than those of future tours. Maybe setting up a guitar on a stand wasn't practical... not enough room? Okay, never mind... it just looks friggin' COOL!
