The companion thread to the Ahnold one.

Similar to Arnold, there's a lot of garbage in the film catalogue BUT when something of his was good, it was influential as hell.

Will have to think on this more deeply but for now....it was close...

1) Rocky

2) First Blood

Rocky

Cop Land

F.I.S.T.

Lords of Flatbush

Rocky II

First Blood

Cliffhanger

Lock Up

Nighthawks

Get Carter

Nighthawks is so underrated.

I don't think it's underrated because people I know that have seen it like it. I think it's more a matter of not being seen by most people. I should watch that again.

Damn, I forgot to add Nighthawks to my list. It's far from a perfect movie. I think it was a little confused, storytelling wise. But I remember it being entertaining.

My absolute favorite Stallone movies are First Blood and Cop Land. I can watch them over and over.

Cop Land does frustrate me a bit because it proves Stallone can carry a movie as an actor, not an action star. It's a shame he didn't branch out like this more often.

Yeah, I pretty much memorized all the lines in First Blood. I like the audio commentary Sly provides in it too; some interesting trivia if you're into that ((holy shit, he really did sew his arm without painkillers!)).

I said a similar thing about Sly in that other thread in that he's more believable than Arnold in those dramatic roles. In fact, I don't remember Arnold doing anything dramatic like Rocky or Copland. And if he did, I don't remember him being good at it.

Stallone is light years ahead of Schwarzenegger as an actor. Schwarzenegger was smart enough not to branch out from action and dubious comedies.

Rocky

Lords of Flatbush

Tango and Cash

I don't know how I could have lived through the 70's, 80's, 90's etc and not seen more of his movies but I missed them! I do want to see Creed though. Geez summer 1977 was a movie summer as I recall seeing Rocky in the theater then, as well as Star Wars!

Rocky must've still been in the cinemas (or re-released) then because it was originally released around Thanksgiving '76.

But yeah, '77 had a bunch: Star Wars, Close Encounters..., Saturday Night Fever, Annie Hall, Smokey & The Bandit, The Hills Have Eyes, The Gauntlet, The Spy Who Loved Me...

Then there was the powerful mini-series Roots.

Yes, I think Rocky stuck around after it won Best Picture; or I might have seen it in what my sister and I used to call the "dollar movies" (guess what they cost). It was just a little before VCR technology came out, so to get the most dollars out of a movie, the company would send it around to the second run theaters, and then to the dollar third run movie theaters if it was still selling tickets.

I was seeing someone that summer and all he ever wanted to do was go to the movies! I'm just as glad we missed "The Hills Have Eyes" but saw most of the rest and some winners like "The Deep" . . . .

Yeah, I remember the dollar cinemas. I saw Tron and Romancing the Stone (among millions of others) at such places. However, a dollar back then wasn't THAT much of a bargain since I remember the new theater prices being $2-2.25 in the late 70s/early 80s.

What about Rocky Balboa or Creed? I don't know where they'd fall exactly but I'd rank them higher than Judge Dredd (hate Rob Schneider), Assassins, and Demolition Man.

Choosing no more than one from a series, my favorites are:

Rocky

First Blood

Nighthawks (terribly underrated)

The Lords Of Flatbush (not that great, but I have a soft spot for it)

Cop Land

Other than a couple of the sequels (mostly the Rocky ones) I can pass on the rest of his career. He's a way better actor than most of the roles he takes, especially when chooses to write/direct. Ugh. If he let others focus on those aspects and chose better scripts, he could be a consistently solid actor...as he has proven in fits and starts in the past.
