Cantlay goes -5 to set the early mark on Thursday. Aberg, Javon, Final and McIlroy looming close behind.

In LIV news, Koepka's early promise faded as he finishes even on the day.

Not enjoying watching the US Open at all so far.  The course is pretty dull

I was looking forward to this course after the LACC debacle last yesr...Chambers Bay still is the gold standard for shitty US Open courses, and I can't imagine that changing but I have to agree with you.  I don't mind a tough course, in fact, the Open course should be that, but...

1). a lot of the differences between a good result on a shot and a bad one seems kind of random, and

2). all of the difficulty seems to be centered around the greens and not necessarily a lot of differences in strategic decision-making and variety in shot making.

Exactly.

How about Rory's save today?  His approach left him above the hole, so his first putt rolls by the cup and down the apron leaving a lengthy chip...which of course he sank.

The other side of that coin, though, was the guy whose seemingly perfect approach hit the stick and bounced back off the green into the bunker.  He thinned his sand shot over the green and walked off with a 7 instead of par.

For the record,  I enjoyed the Chambers Bay Open.

That was Straka who later aced another hole (after about 25 yards of roll.)

Today was just more of the same.  The next time the announcers criticize the course will be the first time, instead they're lavish ing it with praise for requiring precision and being a tough test of golf.  It's almost enough to wish for Joe Buck to return to the broadcast.   Almost.

DeChambeau was in trouble today,  but was saved by a piece of tv equipment ruled an immovable obstruction:

"DeChambeau found his ball in the wooded area but also something else: a narrow ShotLink pole in the vicinity of his intended line. The odds of DeChambeau striking the tracking device with his next shot? Slim to none. But no matter, the obstruction was undoubtedly near or in his line, meaning DeChambeau was entitled to free relief. With a rules official presiding, Golf Digest’s Luke Kerr-Dineen, who was on the scene, reported that “the nearest point of relief that took the ShotLink tower out of play looked to be about 30 feet left of where his ball was, closer to the fairway, plus two more club-lengths.”

He made birdie, lol

DeChambeau? You're making that up.

DeChambeau has it working right now, just blasting it.  McIlroy hanging around two back at -5.  Cantlay going the wrong way and looking worse with a nasty lie on 13.

Aberg makes a triple on 13.  Rory gives a stroke back after getting within one stroke.  Bryson still steady...

Things are heating up, as Rory drops a snake at hole 10 for birdie and Cantlay puts his putt right on top!

Rory tied now at -6 with DeChambeau and Cantlay just one back at -5...

Was just about to post how Bryson's three jack could be the nail in the coffin, and Rory blows a gimme.

They're tied up at -6, with still maybe a bit of hope for Cantlay at -4

Rory blows another shorty on hole 18!!!  :explode:

 That's gonna sting.  Still, Rory is low man in the clubhouse at -5, and...

... Bryson yanked his tee shot and is hitting off the junk.  Tree limb in his backswing... punches it into the bunker.  Up and down gets Bryson the win, a bogie leads to a playoff.

Are these guys just f*cking with Cantlay?

GREAT up and down to save par and take the championship!  Congrats to DeChambeau.

Feel horrible for Rory.

Cameron Young 4 under after 4 today.  It might be fun to see him go 59-59, and NOT win...

Ecofascists throw paint all over the green at 18 as tournament finishes.  At the PGA Tour event, not the exhibition clown tour run by the Saudis.

Silly ecofascists.

This playoff would be so much more interesting if Scottie was playing the 14th and Kim was playing the 6th.

Caitlin Clark with 10 assists so far vs the Chicago Sky.  It's midway thru the 3rd qtr.

The high nimber of assists the result Chennedy Carter doing a nice job defending Clark's shot and drive.  Carter went 6 for 6 early to energize Chicago.  Indiana dominating the back half of the 3rd.  Clark and Boston looking like Stockton-Malone.  68-57 Fever off yet another Clark assist.  She got two more while I was writing this post, lol.

And Mitchell just had a 4pt play.  72-57 Indiana
