With the Masters being an invitational tournament, and with Mickelson having a lifetime invitation, one wonders if the Augusta officials had discreet conversations with Mickelson about his not paying them a visit this year.

Augusta cannot abide controversy

The odds on Phil being absent from Augusta, and Tiger potentially playing, would have been pretty high when Phil was winning a major and Tiger couldn`t walk.

If Tiger plays then it`s basically the plot to The Dark Knight Rises and confirms my long-held suspicion that he might be superhuman. If he competes at some kind of standard, then it`s beyond even Ben Hogan`s achievement in returning to the game after a serious crash.

Confirmed. Freddy Couples said Tiger is "bombing" drives, and I just watched YouTube footage of Tiger working out on the range at Augusta.

A lot of anti-Tiger sentiment here in the UK, how the coverage focuses on him. I would happily watch Tiger cam - although if he gets through 72 it would be a surprise. 36 holes with a respectable score, and leg still in tact, would be fine by me. I`ve always had more respect for the guy that wins through force of will and intimidating the field, not just with great play.

Phil out of the Masters. Now, I realize he's made this bed and has to lie in it, but at the same time, it's not like he's the only PGA player who has stepped outside the lines, so to speak. (*DJ cough cough) and others who have done things (*cough cough Tiger DUI painkillers) But I guess since this was a direct attack at the PGA, it's different. No idea whose idea this was, his or theirs, or who, exactly. But it's all a shame.

It's good that he's not playing. All the BOOS coming from the crowd would makes things rather awkward.

He probably would get booed, which, for a popular "good guy" like him who always had the crowd pulling for him, would be a really weird thing to see.

If he ever plays a PGA tournament again, he should expect it. He has to do some major mea culpa to get back into everyone’s good graces.

For me, there is no other more compelling athlete to watch than Tiger, so I am thrilled he is playing.

I think if a golfer got booed st the Masters, the booer would probably be escorted from the grounds.

Probably, but if several or many people boo, then that would be quite a conundrum.

Dead silence after Phil is announced would be really interesting. Not a peep from anyone. Maybe some crickets chirping.....

Some fun moments early in round 1 of the Masters, including a nice par on hole 4 by Harrington. With the traditional Thursday pin tucked deep in the right corner, Padraig over cut his tee shot to short side himself. His pitch landed short of the hole, but of course released and ran the full length of the green to leave a 60-footer for par. Padraig's putt tracked perfectly and went in, giving everyone in the group a good laugh.

Tiger had a nice par save on hole 1 to start his round.

Good to see that Tiger is not obviously grimacing after big shots (and I think it`s fair to say he`s not hidden discomfort in the past), and his swing looks to be loosening up in the sun. Looked a little tight on 1 and 2 He`s given himself a very reasonable birdie opportunity on the very tough 5th.

He just stiffed it on the Par 3 hole 6. Should be an easy birdie.

Hmmm. Tiger definitely feeling his back a little on the tee and then limping down 9, after firing it into the pine needles. Walking like I did before I stopped playing :| .

Someone withdrawing from the Tiger threeball is no shock. But that it`s Oosthuizen who leaves, that is.

Maybe Louis was sick and tired of the fans and media trampling over him to get a better look at TIGER WOODS.

Or maybe he has a back injury.

Woods having a bogey-fest so far today, at 3-over on the after four holes. And he just blocked his drive on hole 5 way right.

Flirting with a missed cut at this rate.

Which was caused by all the fans and media trampling over him..... ;)

If Scheffler keeps this up, I may have to accept that he is a legitimate World No.1 after all.

But the world No.973 has just made a great birdie on 10. :notworthy:

Scheff is having a great round. Tiger just made back to back birdies, so it looks like he'll make the cut.

ETA: He launched a 250yd 5wood just off the green and so will have an eagle chip.

Scheffler shoots a lights out 5-under and gets to -8 for a five-stroke lead. Lowry shoots -4 to get to -3 overall, good enough for a second-place tie position. Im and Smith both shot +1, but are still in contention if they go low Saturday.

After 36 holes, +4 is what it takes to play Saturday, and Woods played well enough to find himself in the top 20. Could be a fun weekend...

Always is the highlight of the golfing calendar for me, Augusta weekend. I`m delighted to see a strong set of players within some sort of reach of the lead. I`m not familiar enough with him to know whether Scheffler has the cojones to hold them off.

That was some back nine from TW. Nobody can complain that the press don`t look in a different direction when Justin Thomas and Matsuyama were watching Tiger putt on 16, rather than playing out 15. :D
