foghorn-leghorn
Ah, The great George Galloway. Despite being portrayed as an idiot, especially after his "Cat impersonation" I will never forget his appearance in Washington where he was facing a whole series of trumped up charges involving Saddam Hussein. He tore them apart. Here's part one where they lay out the charges and George is given the right of reply. To say he owned them and made them look pathetic, would be the understatement of the century. Watch the whole thing, it's 45 minutes of sheer brilliance. What the American's thought they would gain from having a go at him is a mystery, but they clearly had no idea who or what they were dealing with Suffice to say, they will think twice before trying it again with a British MP. It is simply no contest. Edited June 4, 2016 by foghorn-leghorn

goose
Great quote, really. Respect is among the basic things in this world, since its existance. It solves troubles, it's light to carry inside and healthy. Everybody likes it.Silly quote, political correctness goes well beyond that. You might as well substitute the word "mustard", it would be just as accurate.http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3jofOjsc5Dw/VYqOsSJR-aI/AAAAAAAACd8/f23ZrtU0qRs/s1600/MadMustard_BrightYellowWalls.jpeg

ILSnwdog
Some people regard private enterprise as a predatory tiger to be shot. Others look on it as a cow they can milk. Not enough people see it as a healthy horse, pulling a sturdy wagon. Success is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm. The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion. An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. If you are going through hell, keep going. Winston Churchill

Mr. Not
Ethnocentrism is one thing, but I see nothing wrong with people who are proud of their heritages. Good on them. If someone's born with lower limb reductions, a genetic accident, then sure they should be proud. A lot of that would be due to what Carlin's saying about achieving yourself, since the child would be adapting to the disability, but there still is nothing wrong with being proud about something innate about you. All I really took from this George Carlin quote was this: George Carlin doesn't understand the definition of pride. Rick N. Backer
This is one that touched me deeply when I first read it, and as I get older I appreciate it more and more: “So do we pass the ghosts that haunt us later in our lives; they sit undramatically by the roadside like poor beggars, and we see them only from the corners of our eyes, if we see them at all. The idea that they have been waiting there for us rarely crosses our minds. Yet they do wait, and when we have passed, they gather up their bundles of memory and fall in behind, treading in our footsteps and catching up, little by little.” It's by Stephen King.

All I really took from this George Carlin quote was this: George Carlin doesn't understand the definition of pride. What about pride being one of the seven deadly sins? Clearly Carlin wasn't the first to see pride as a bad thing. In regards to being proud of your national heritage, well, we can look at Germany as a test case. In the 30s-40s Germany took nationalism and patriotism to the extreme. Things have turned completely around since then, and today Germany is a very humble and modest country. There, nationalism is a bad word that conjures up memories they do not want (and with good reason: the WWII atrocities were conducted by a different generation, one who is now either elderly or gone). If you go to Germany today you will not find the proverbial patriot running around waving flags and shouting "Wooooo, Germany rules!" So keep that in mind during discussions of pride. But back to Carlin's quote, I completely agree. The fact that I happen to have been born a particular ethnicity or nationality is no reason for pride; that would imply that one is better than another, and isn't that what all of our wars are based upon?

The fact that I happen to have been born a particular ethnicity or nationality is no reason for pride; that would imply that one is better than another, and isn't that what all of our wars are based upon? A major source of ethnic pride in this country was born from racist abuse. The Irish and Italians who came to this country in the 1800's and early 1900's were treated like vermin on the East Coast. That abuse sewed the seeds of Irish-American and Italian-American pride. But in principle, yes, pride in one's ethnic heritage doesn't mean much on its own. People still have to earn respect from others, regardless of their lineage. Edited June 16, 2016 by Principled Man
