Happy Birthday Hemispheres

The Trees is an amazing song

Agreed. So are Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, Circumstances, and La Villa Strangiato! Hemispheres is a perfect album.

I wrote that as I was listening to that red vinyl Toymaker posted

Of course we know the songs so well, but sometimes they strike you like "Holy ****, what a great song"

Listening to it now...something I've never noted to talk about before, but there just seems to be such a brightness to the recording...with the exception of maybe Circumstances, the whole album sounds as fresh and modern (and just flat-out awesome) to me as it did the first time I ever heard it.

And I didn't single out Circumstances because I don't like it, or anything. That isn't the case at all. I just meant that it doesn't sound quite as bright as the others, and the vocals are buried a bit more than the other two compositions with vocals on that album. But I love, love, love the tune. It's a great, terse little rock and roll tune.

This is how I feel about Hemisperes.

I can recall the first time I heard La Villa Strangiato....a friend played it for me and I went out and bought the album as fast as possible. Arguably the band's most ambitious piece and really the culmination of the most progressive period.

I have always liked Circumstances, and since Hemispheres has been on heavy rotation lately, I am loving it more now than ever . . .

The instrumental interlude with Geddy on keys and Neil playing the glockenspiel or crotales - I love it

Any drummers out there - what is Neil playing in that section ?

Good question - I'd like to know what crotales are and an example from one of their tunes. I always thought it was that sort of bell-like swishy sound that you hear in Witch Hunt, but I think I'm wrong about that. Edit: I think that noise is a "bell tree."

I think it is here - to Neil's left

I would say a mini xylophone, but I am sure there is a proper name

What I see in the above photo, clockwise from left, are temple blocks, tubular bells, wind chimes (barely visible), the bell tree, and . . . glockenspiel? The crotales are mounted on top of the tubular bell rack in this photo (below), I just don't know what song(s) they're used in?

Crotales sort of just sound like a mini crash cymbal. I'm having a hard time thinking of a lot of uses in Rush songs, but I know they get a fair amount of use in Anagram

I'll have to search down the Holder of the Sporks and see if I can't find him.

And write a memo to LIX making sure he picks up a carton of Corn Dogs for Narps on his way over.

I will be sure to remember a good plate of poo for the miserable crowd.

Looks like I gained fifty pounds, but at least my cheeks are rosy, and I'm still smiling. :)

i guess it was my fault.

I did say about the cupcakes:

"Take as many as you want!"
