Where's that F# Alex owns in Hemispheres? The one he ends Far Cry with.

It's the chord that Hemispheres opens with

Yep, that's the one.

I never made that connection, either, until I read it in some post here, in the recent past.

Alex talks about it in a "making of" documentary on Snakes & Arrows. He mentioned that he used the F# chord from Hemispheres.

Thank you for answering me.

That's what that sound is? It doesn't sound the same as in Far Cry.

The first chord is, not that swirling sound as the song starts.

Am I hearing it at almost the end too? At about 15:58?

I can play it on guitar and can confirm the chord does play there. It's a cool chord!

I can play an F#, too. :)

Haha...seriously, though, my "favourite" chord of all (if you can allow me to indulge in something rather banal and silly, like that...yes, I realize it) is F#m. It just...gives me chills and warms me up, all at once.

I think you hear it a few times during the song. I've heard it referred to as the Alex Lifeson chord. Not that he originated it by any means but because he's popular for using it.

I thought he said in the Snakes documentary that he owns it?

If he did it was a joke. Nobody owns a chord.

Decided to listen to S&A again today. It's pretty much in T4E-CP territory for me, lots of good/great material, but lacking focus and having some lyrics I don't prefer (Faithless is probably in my top ten least favorite Rush songs simply for the lyrics). However, I did discover I really like Spindrift. Excellent tune. Edited by Entre_Perpetuo

Excellent material:

Far Cry

Malignant Narcissism

The Way The Wind Blows

Spindrift

Workin' Them Angels

We Hold On

Pretty good/great material:

The Main Monkey Business

Hope

The Larger Bowl (might need to revisit this, I think I forgot about it after hearing Spindrift)

Armor And Sword

Bravest Face

Good News First

Stuff I don't prefer:

Faithless

That is the coolest chord in the history of music! Well, maybe after that final chord of A Day in the Life. Pretty good second though.

And Seque, you are so right about TMMB. The Larger Bowl was the first song that grabbed me on the album (Alex's guitar mainly, but I like it all, apart from the woo-oo's maybe) but it was TMMB that eventually made me realize that Rush was/is as awesome as ever! I'd always resented everything post-MP for not being Hemi/PeW/MP, but TMMB made me realize that even if they had never made those albums, Rush would still be an all-time great. I love S&A. I skip The Way the Wind Blows (too bombastic and preachy for me, though I admit that me calling something preachy is ironic), and I'm sometimes not in the mood for the plodding heaviness of Armour and Sword, but I pretty much love the rest of it. Glad you've seen the light!

Pretty meh to me overall but there are several highpoints. Specifically The Main Monkey Business (their best individual piece in a very long time) and Malignant Narcissism. Among the songs with actual lyrics only Hope really resonates with me. I think it's telling the two instrumentals are far and away the best songs. Hadn't really thought about it until reading some posts here but from RTBones forward the lyrics really fell off in quality. They're often very poor melodies and more often just downright silly.
