What's with all the tone-control etc. knobs? One for each string + volume?

Looks like a guitar from an old Sears catalogue!

Our Alex was always on the cutting edge

It was a Roland GR 500 .. one of the first attempts at a synth guitar

This first pic is great - sorry I cannot find it any larger

Here's the GR 500 with it's original pickup .. seems Alex swapped out the original for a humbucker

hey man there has to be at least one knob turned up to 11...even though it does nothing. All that knobbery and he's still just playing a basic barre chord. roland obviously doesn't understand that a guitarists right hand is busy enough...which is why we let the feet do some work instead.

That looks like the F# sus chord that opens Book II

Alex probably just put that humbucker in, bypassing everything but the volume knob !!!

Hey maybe that's a new level of absurdity for a guitar...just cover the top entirely with useless dials and switches. no need to make a cavity for them, just glue them on. May Rick Neilsen has considered that?

He used the synth during the "I have memory and awareness" section of Hemispheres.

He also had an almost new (about a year old) JCM 900 cabinet that I bought out off him for some ridiculously low amount. I'm thinking it was $200.

F#sus is played on the 2nd fret, isn't it? Looks more like G major to me. ;)

And does that F# chord even come up after the "I have memory and awareness" bit? I think Alex switches to the guitar above for that part and then keeps it through the rest of the song.

You're right GF !!!

I wasn't thinking of Alex playing a straight G barre chord !!

What's Steven Wilson doing in Geddy Lee's baseball room? And does that hammer have . . . blood on it??!

Sometimes baseball collectors don't want to readily give up their prize swag to Geddy.

I wonder who everyone lined up in the background is? Waiting to see Rush?

I remember looking at that pic when I was a kid wondering the same thing. Nowadays I'm not sure those are people in the background...not sure what it is, though.

I remember this pic from the Permanent Waves tour book

I could be wrong, but going way back, I seem to remember reading about a connection between this pic and this Spirit Of Radio soundcheck - both the pic and video coming from the same venue

Even if memory serves, the info could have been wrong .. this definitely requires some more digging
