Need help getting a new electric guitar

I'm not a good guitar player. I generally play bad rhythm guitar and far worse soloing efforts. I have a Washburn D-10n and a Fender Telecaster. I don't really like the sound of the Tele and never have, and I have decided to get a new guitar. The problem is that I don't know anything about guitars, I'm not a good player, and I will never devote the time necessary for me to become a competent player. However, I do like to pick up a guitar a couple times a week and play some songs or patterns that I know, and occasionally learn a simple version of a new song.

I would like an ok guitar that has a more classic rock sound to it than the tele has, and if looks cool, that's a plus. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I don't want a piece of junk that sounds horrible, either.

With the above in mind, does anyone have a suggestion for a new guitar for me?

Epiphone is a really good make for beginners and has a pretty decent sound. If your looking for a brand new guitar, epiphones cheapest models will probably run you $300-$500. That's around the cheapest your going to find for any brand new guitar. But really if you think that's expensive, go take a look over at gibsons models.

Honestly, depending on how much money you want to spend you really can't beat the Agile guitars at Rondomusic.com for value for what you get. I've had several of their guitars and they're very well-made. If you compare the specs between them and the Epiphones or Gibsons they're very comparable. I have an Agile Dauntless (like an AL-2000 with Seymour Duncan pickups) that I love. I had an AL – 3000 with a spalted maple years ago that was just gorgeous. They play every bit as good or better than the lower end Gibsons. I bought a Studio a couple of years ago and returned it because it didn't play as well as my Dauntless. They can make them cheap because there is no Gibson name attached. They're about half the price.

I too have heard similar recommendations regarding the Epiphone.

I highly recommend the PRS SE series guitars. They are between $400 and $800, and are great quality. I play my Paul Allender SE more than my Les Paul, so that says something about how even the cheapest PRS guitars are made with such excellent quality.

And definitely check out Craigslist if you think you'd be willing to go that route. Lots of people with good gear priced to sell.

tons of stuff on craigslist and you can really beat up someone on price since they're probably selling it to pay rent. :smash:

But yeah in your case I would go with a PRS SE, a cheaper strat or an Epiphone ES335 clone.

I'm with you on the Tele...it's the only guitar that I've ever bought that was just uncomfortable for me to play. It's probably because I'm a bigger guy with gorilla-long arms. Never could get a comfortable playing position with it.

No brand of guitar will fix that.

IMO save your money and just keep your Tele.

I've got a Fender American Deluxe Strat that I'm selling but that sounds like more than you want to spend.

So what are the specs and how much you asking...just so I can torture myself.

Sounds sweet but I prefer rosewood. Other priorities right now but thanks for sharing. I'll stop torturing myself.

I've had lots of guitars and basses and finally came to the conclusion that FB material is just for show. Just depends on what you like the looks of the most. I used to not want anything but maple for years but a few rosewood FB's changed my mind. It's all good. :)

I agree

An Epiphone Les Paul, especially with some decent pickups in place of the originals

LedRush, what amp are you playing thru ?

I've got a bunch of guitars - 1980 BC Rich Eagle, 1975 Les Paul Custom, a '79 Les Paul Standard, a '79 Dean V

I also have a 2007 Epiphone Les Paul that I love - I just put two old Seymour Duncan pickups in it, and the Epi is right up there ....

My practice set up is simple, and the sound is killer - three things I recommend that are great together and are very reasonable price-wise:

-Vintage 1980s Laney Pro Tube 30 Watt Combo - killer amp

- Epiphone Les Paul

But I don't like my Tele, and I understand that no new guitar will make me a better player. I just want to have more fun when I do play.

Thanks for the recommendations. Right now I am looking at some of the Epiphone Les Pauls, and it looks like they have some ok ones at around $200. I was prepared to pay up to about $800 or so, but I'm not really sure what the difference between these models http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Special-II-Plus-Top-Limited-Edition-Electric-Guitar.gc or http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Slash-AFD-Les-Paul-Guitar-Outfit.gc (at around $200) or these models http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Limited-Edition-Les-Paul-PlusTop-PRO-Electric-Guitar.gc or http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Les-Paul-Standard-PlusTop-Pro-Electric-Guitar.gc (about $500) would be. Would the extra $300 spent really matter for a beginner?

I would recommend this one:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Les-Paul-Standard-Plain-Top-Electric-Guitar.gc

And I see they have used models like this for about $100 less

LedRush, what sound do you like , or, what can you envision being "your sound" ? ... Something chunky like "What You're Doing" - like early Alex, or Slash, Schenker, etc ??

With your Fender amp and the Tele, you are going to get a very clean sound - no balls .. So unless you want to play straight country or Elvis, I would say trade the Tele in, trade the amp in and look for that Laney combo - they are always on eBay - but I can only recommend a vintage Laney

If you get the three things in my other post, I guarantee you will feel completely inspired and be playing things like Black Dog and Finding My Way in no time .....

PM me if you ever want any more info
