Tony R Posted August 3, 2015 Author Posted August 3, 2015 It's not over until the children's book author tweets. He did. Good old Kevin must praise the day he hooked up with NEP and got to sell shitloads of his crappy books. 2

JBsDWdrums Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 On a side note....I'm now reading Dune by Herbert for the first time and am enjoying it...it was a gift in the leather bound B&N edition...great looking book as well..... From what I'm reading though it looks as if I should stop there? I own Clockwork and am well aware of the "Owen grabbed an apple declaring 'I shall eat this apple because I choose freewill' you can choose not to decide" stuff. 1
Stan Getz Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 "What? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor...hell no!" 3

ctbadger Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 First of all, I agree that Kevin Anderson is a hack. What I don't get is why Neil likes him so much. When you see the books Neil has read Anderson's writing is garbage. And I couldn't stand all the Rush lyrics he shoehorned in there. Blech. Anyhoo, I was thinking what would be cool is having Neil retire from touring but still be the lyricist and studio drummer for the band, and then have someone like Portnoy be the touring drummer. I can dream, right?

From what I'm reading though it looks as if I should stop there? Dune is an excellent book and I love to re-read it every few years. But stop there. The first sequel is bad, the second is so atrocious I wasn't able to finish it, and I've heard the rest are worse. Apparently Herbert used up all his rocket sauce on the original book. 3

I think the sequels were a fairly decent attempt at expanding a universe. I like the books. But he kind of got full of himself...while trying to describe the enormity of his universe and the scope of it. But I think the stories would have been better with tighter editing.

I can dream, right? Up until this tour, I was perfectly OK with Peart staying home for the tours and letting someone else sit in for him on the gigs (maybe not Portnoy, but someone with decent chops and enthusiasm for the opportunity), but now that Alex's playing has diminished so rapidly, along with Geddy's voice, I think it really is time for the band to be done.

A resurgence in fan enthusiasm, but I figure that's mostly due to the set list and a "this might be the last time we get to see them" pre-nostalgia.They have played exceptionally well. Fans are one thing, but all you have to do is read the reviews of the casual observer in print/digital media. The biggest criticisms have come from a few (mainly those who play in tribute bands). Alex hasn't been perfect this tour...but a decline? When has he ever been perfect? Geddy's voice is much improved... significantly so. They've got gas in that tank. 3
Blue J Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 (edited) I don't get how anyone who saw a show (or more) on this tour could think that they don't have gas left in that tank. If this tour, if that last show, was their closing statement- they've gone out on an unbelievable high. And if there is anything left for the future (not necessarily live performance, but just anything)- I'll welcome it. Edited August 3, 2015 by Blue J 1
