HYF is Certainly of it's time. but i think it's beautiful. Aged better then Power Windows though i love that album too.

Mick

I agree with you.

But I don't see why an album sounding "dated" is a bad thing.

If I listen to an eighties album, I want eighties music, dammit!

My friends think Fleetwood Mac sound dated. I tell them they sound of their time and that is the magic of it: listen beyond the sound and open your ears to timeless music.

I think the same of Rush. Sure, the debut is typical of the time period. But it kicks ass. They got better, yes. No doubt about that.

Moving Pictures, however, could have come out last week and it would still sound fresh. Retro, in part, but fresh.

and you know what else i noticed? the music dating thing only really get's heavily used with the 80's.

though i know why.....but it's still funny

Mick

I think it depends solely on whether or not you like the sounds typical of an era. But music doesn't need to be "dated", sure you can probably guess the exact month of the year Power Windows came out based on its sound. And yes it is an "old" album.

But it sounds like a great product of its time with stacks of brilliance to appeal to a modern listener!

The only era that really sounds lacklustre to me is the nineties. But that is partly because the radio pushed samey bands. Not dissing the decade, I love plenty of it. But it is in general my least favourite decade, counting from the sixties onwards.

as a 90's kid. that decade did haved a general blandness to the sound.

Mick

The 90s (especially 90-95) was a breath of fresh air for popular and radio music. The 80s were bland, samey, and weak. The 90s were much more diverse, powerful, and emphatic.

growing up in it. i hated it. i've gained respect for a lot of it since. Still my least fav decade. i like music now better honestly.

Mick

It depends on what music we're talking about. Music that was popular and/or played on the radio, or all music that was released? The 80s had a lot of good music, but very little of it was popular. Pop music in the 90s was far more powerful, and guitar oriented, then the pop music of the 80s.

I must admit...the late eighties was getting ridiculous.

I will always be a supporter of the grunge movement, and the return to grittier rock appeals to me more than the stale hair metal and AOR that dominated the airwaves. I love this style of music at its best, but towards the end of the eighties it was fast becoming plastic and easily mass produced.

The nineties is amazing...it is...especially for pop...but I cannot deny the bands I live the most went on to do better in the 2000's, and the nineties is overall my least played decade.

No hate from me. Never.

None from me either......just not my cup of tea.......

i liked the idea of grunge more then what came of it if that makes sense.

And vocals in the in the 90's most always boiled down to that same generic growl style.....or whiny take your pick, lol

I definitely agree with your assessment of the '90s, here- the grunge and alt-rock bands that came along and got big during the first half of the '90s were fantastic, and did breathe life into both culture and sales.

I used to be severely prejudiced against '80s music, in general. And I've found that there is some of it that I really do love. I can say that most of it, I don't, still. But I don't write off the whole era as a waste, which I really used to do. There's Rush, and 'college rock' (classic REM, for example), and quite a bit of metal that was fantastic in the '80s.

Because of the synth-pop and reggae influenced sound of the time.

I'm going to have a HYF love fest tonight while closing the lounge.

If you want to close a business establishment, that's probably one of the fastest ways to do it :)

For me, it's the last "great" Rush album, and the last one that was truly worthy of the brand.

Even here though, the rot had set in, as Force 10 is embarrassing and the last two songs are shite...everything else is stellar though.

It was to be all downhill from hereon though........

That is some bold Tai Shan right there. I love the album but I'm not ready to take the ride to Crazy Town with you.

Force Ten is awesome. Second Nature, Lock and Key, and Turn The Page are the mediocre ones in my book. The first three songs, Prime Mover and Mission are the real quality songs. I find HYF much like SnA. Half of it is really good.....other half.....not so much.

SnA would be a fine record to listen to on a trip to West Virginie or something. Backwoods, inbred, folk music:) haha I was so disappointed when that record came out. The teaser we got from Far Cry had me all excited for a return to prog Rush with maybe some keys returning as well, but alas. Irish shanty folk tunes with a Rush twist. ugh! Edited by presto123

HYF is one of the albums that got me into Rush and to this day it remains my second or third favorite album behind 2112 and perhaps Power Windows. Picking between HYF & Power Windows is very hard. Both are wonderful.

Neil's lyrics on HYF are some of his very best & the music fits perfectly with them.

I strongly like ever song on HYF with the exception of High Water. Its just ok.

Just a great album - at least to my ears.

Same here. Only I strongly live High Water.

I love Tai Shan. A lot. A nice, gentle and ethereal piece of music.
