Okay I realize some people are going to be on me like pack animals right now but... I don't understand 2112's great acclaim. I get the historical significance but the suite itself is not outstanding besides the overture and Temples. I mean it's good... And the other songs are just mediocre except Passage and Somethign for Nothing. Can someone set me straight please?

Personally, I think 2112 is phenomenal. But not everyone likes everything Rush has done, so if this doesn't work for you then that's just How It Is.

Maybe reading Ayn Rand's ANTHEM might generate a little interest in the story ... just let the music create the visuals

It's a bit overrated, if you ask me. It's basically an album of peaks and valleys. The peaks are among Rush's best work and they are heavy and they ROCK.

In many ways I still think of this as Rush's most perfect song.

There is nothing to set straight. You either dig the album or you don't. You're not required to love every album that the band has recorded.

 

You could go to a U2 forum and ask the same question about The Joshua Tree. It's all subjective opinion and personal taste.

Nothing to explain OP, either you enjoy it or you don't. Personally, it's one of my favorite Rush songs.

 

I was talking about the title track btw, I agree completely with that part of your comment

Enjoy or not. Up to you. I personally think it is perfect from start to finish. Side two is great in my view. Both playful and kick @ss at different times. I am convinced now that Lessons is the most underrated song they have ever done. I appreciate you putting the final nail in that coffin at least as you don't even mention the song when you discuss side two. Thanks much... :cheers:

In any case, don't read Anthem. 2112 might be inspired by it, but it's a very different story.

I don't think you can discount its importance, because if it hadn't succeeded, Rush might have been over and done a long time ago.

 

But I've heard it so much, on radio and live, that it's almost becoming in danger of being overplayed and overthought. When I do listen to it these days, I do it to hear the second side as much as anything. If I want to hear "Bangkok" I listen to ESL as I believe that to be the superior version.

It's not the nostalgia necessarily. I see Tears as a nice change of pace on an album that rocks at a pretty high level throughout. The post-1990 stuff, because they were typically longer albums, had more space for mediocre songs, so a change of pace wasn't as appreciated.
