Got to see Eric Johnson this evening at the Orange Peel here in Asheville. This was the 4th time I have seen EJ dating back to 1990. As usual nothing short of amazing IMO. Well rounded setlist with all 4 of his studio discs well represented. He also played 4 new songs( Boston, Brillant Rim?, Morning Sun, and ?), which I thought was odd knowing how long between new discs he is.

He did an unknown to me,  killer little country/western picking number ( think roy clark with attitude) right after a ferociously ripping rendition of Hendrix's Angel.

So nothing from Alien Love Child - Live and beyond or Souvenir? He does a great version of Paperback Writer on Souvenir...

Glad you enjoyed the gig mate, I've been a fan for 20 years but never seen him live as he never tours over here, not even backing up Satriani...

I feel lucky because since moving to Asheville in the past 2.5 years, I have seen at the Orange Peel, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Ozric Tentacles, & Yngwie ( 3 of my all time favorites and Yngwie). In October Buckethead plays here. For a city of only 70,000 I gotta say we do get some stellar guitar shows.

He may well have another tour album too...the others, Island of lost minds, Inbred Mountain, The Elephant Man's Alarm Clock, are all great...the last two are among his best ever...

I spent the weekend in Seattle at the Bumbershoot festival...I went with my friend Ethan, who really wanted to see A Tribe Called Quest live. I'll do my best attempt at a recap.

We didn't really see anybody on Saturday...we just came there to get oriented with how the festival works. All the main acts that day were shitty emo bands like AFI and Yellowcard.

Sunday we met up with our friend Paul and spent the day hanging out with him. We went to the afternoon mainstage show featuring Spoon and New Pornographers. Very good. Then we went to some record store where there was supposed to be a band Paul liked doing a signing. Didn't happen. We went back into the festival intending to check out an underground hip-hop group called Common Market, but we saw that the line had already started for Kanye West, so we figured we had better get in line. We ended up waiting in line for 2 hours before they let us in, and then we waited another two hours or so for the show to start. The mainstage shows are in the Washington Huskies football stadium. The entire field is open floor. We ended up scoring a spot dead center, about 20 feet from the stage.

Blue Scholars were the opening act, a local Seattle hip-hop crew. They were terrific. They did a great job of keeping the crowd engaged, and they sounded pretty good. Ethan bought their CD. To be honest, I thought they were better than Kanye West. I saw him last december at the Coliseum, and he was excellent, but Sunday night he just seemed like he was coasting. About 25 minutes of his set was devoted to shortened covers of songs he produced for other artists before he made his first solo album. And he had none of his guest stars there with him, so most of his songs were shortened. Lupe Fiasco did come out for his verse on Touch the Sky, in the encore, but he also came out in the middle of Kanye's regular set to do two songs off his upcoming album. During this, Kanye left the stage entirely. Lupe seems like a cool guy. Probably the best Muslim skateboarder video-game-nerd rapper in the world. But this was a Kanye West show, so I thought it was a little inappropriate for someone else to take over entirely. Given Kanye's ego, I'm surprised he allowed this. But when he stuck to his own material, he was fantastic. He had a string section onstage with him, and most of his songs translated well. He opened with Diamonds and Heard 'Em Say, and he hit most of the highlights from College Dropout and Late Registration. We Don't Care, Gold Digger, All Falls Down, New Workout Plan, Through the Wire, Addiction...By far the highlight, though, was the encore of Jesus Walks and Touch the Sky. Powerful stuff.

Monday was the best day though. We spent the morning at the EMP Sky Church stage, checking out a local hip-hop showcase. The first act, Abyssian Creole, was pretty good. We got to meet one of the guys in the crew, too, after the show. Then there was this white dude called Macklemore, who had a really crazy flow. He did a song wearing a George W. Bush mask. He was by far the most enjoyable. The third act, Saturday Knights, sucked, so we left after two songs and headed over to the mainstage to catch the end of Steve Miller's set. I'm not a huge fan of Steve Miller, but he was enjoyable. The band was tight, he was in good voice, and he played most of the songs you'd expect. During Fly Like an Eagle, he everybody in the band took a solo, and his keyboard player even came out and busted a rap. The rest of it was pretty noneventful. He did Dance Dance Dance, Take the Money and Run, Rockin' Me, Jet Airliner, Jungle Love, and The Joker, from what I saw. The dude has a LOT of hits. I'm not into his career at all, but I knew every single song he played.

After Steve Miller, we got dinner and got in line for A Tribe Called Quest. The line was insane, and the wait was just as long as it was for Kanye West the night before, but we were very near the front, and this time we were able to get seats RIGHT at the front of the stage. Atmosphere opened. I had heard some of their stuff before, but I was really impressed with their live performance. During the first half of the set, Brother Ali (another underground rapper) joined them, and for the second half, they had a live band. But a Tribe Called Quest f***ing killed it. They opened with Buggin' Out and drew mostly from The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders, and their set was very energetic. The Low End Theory remains probably my favorite hip-hop album of all time, and they sounded great. In the encore, during Award Tour, Q-Tip jumped off the stage and came out onto the barricade RIGHT where Ethan and I were standing.

Then we drove home. Got in around 2 AM. Still recovering.

Last night, September 6th, 2006, PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, New Jersey. Here is my review:

Well guys, I went to the show last night and it was utterly mindblowing. Roger's voice sounded terrific, and the band was very tight & focused. Roger seemed to be happy to be at the PNC Bank Arts Center as well, he smiled a lot. At one point, after one of the songs ended, he said "I can't think of a better way of spending my birthday." Roger actually has the same b-day as I do, he was born yesterday in 1943, he is now 63. I was born yesterday, 15 years ago. So the fact that it was both of our birthdays and that I was seeing him live is something I'll never forget. There were also some pyrotechnics incorporated into the show during some songs. Great job with the lighting as well.

The Setlist:

In The Flesh

Mother

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5)

Have A Cigar

Wish You Were Here

Southampton Dock

The Fletcher Memorial Home

Perfect Sense (Parts 1 & 2)

Leaving Beirut (Rog received a 50/50 mix of boos & cheers. Cheers obviously for the music, some people I know said this tune was horrible but I didn't think it was that bad. Boos because I believe some of the lyrics were anti-American).

Sheep (During the 23rd Psalm section of the song, a man came out of nowhere holding a couple of strings connected to a giant pink inflatable pig! It was truly amazing, he came up right near where I was sitting and I nearly touched the pig.)

15-minute Intermission

2nd Half, Dark Side of The Moon:

Speak To Me/Breathe

On The Run (the backdrops were very trippy, reminiscent of the early projected slide shows PF used back in the late 60's, they also had some random train noises in the song)

Time

The Great Gig In The Sky (the studio version of this song still frightens me, and I don't like what the 3 female vocalists on Pulse did with it, but the woman who sang this (name escapes me right now) did a FANTASTIC job. She packed so much emotion into her wordless vocals)

Money (Dave Kilminster was one of the definite highlights of the show, he sang on a lot of songs and was the lead guitarist. He had a really nice light green guitar as well. He ROCKED on this song! His singing wasn't bad either)

Us & Them

Any Colour You Like (fantastic job on the keyboards & synths by Jon Carin & Harry Waters (<<Roger's son!)

Brain Damage

Eclipse (great ending to Dark Side, they really rocked at the end of it)

Encore:

The Happiest Days of Our Lives/Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)

Vera (very emotional, Roger actually began to tear halfway through this)

Bring The Boys Back Home (Roger's veins were pulsating in his neck during this one, he extended it to about 2 1/2 minutes, fantastic job)

Comfortably Numb (great ending, Roger came out right before they left for good, and said something like: "Did you like the f'ing pig?".

Absolutely mindboggling show. The crowd was great too, although it kind of annoyed me that during almost every song he did, large amounts of people were walking up & down the stairs, probably to get more booze. Sad.

But I stayed the entire time. Fantastic, astonishing. I can't stop describing it. If any of you have a chance to see Roger this year, BUY TICKETS! You won't regret it.

Holy shit, I am going to be seeing him in early October and I hope to hell he keeps that same setlist. Its too bad there isnt as much Amused To Death material in there, but I will settle for Sheep, Vera, Fletcher Memorial Home. Cant wait, thanks for the review.

Dogs would have been good to hear from Rog too.

Yeah, Dogs sounds great live. He played it on his "In The Flesh" tour in 1999. I saw him sometime in the summer of that year and I remember him performing it. Sheep is my favorite song on the Animals album.

I'm not sure if he'll keep the setlist exactly the same. He may take a couple of songs out and throw in some surprises, not positive on that one. And no problem about the review, I enjoyed typing it. biggrin.gif

Queensryche - Oct 2, 2006 - Dodge Theater, Phoenix, AZ

  • Sound Quality = B+
  • Sound Mix = B
  • Band Energy = A
  • Musical Performance = A+
  • Light Show = C+

    -------------- Overall Score = B

Pretty easy review here, as the set list was all of Mindcrime l and Mindcrime ll. Plus the 2 extra songs that didn't make Mindcrime l and an encore of 2 songs. Overall, this was a great concert, actually a full blown "Concert Musical", complete with costume changes. They started right at 8pm and proceeded to play Mindcrime l in it's entirety. Then there was a 20 minute intermission. They came back out and played Mindcrime ll in it's entirety.

Kind of a low budget show as far as production goes. Only 1 large video screen, minor stage props with stairs leading to an upper stage, where a lot of the "specialty" songs were performed by Geoff Tate and the female singer who plays Mary. Medium sized lighting rig and medium PA.

I really enjoyed the show and was very excited to get to hear Mindcrime l again live. I had the chance to see them on the original tour, which was much more ellaborate and high tech. But still, it was a great concert, which the estimated 5000 fans all enjoyed.

Their new guitarist was outstanding!

The encore was "Walk In The Shadows" and "Jet City Woman", both awesome!!

Roger Waters "Dark side of the Moon Live" tour - October 3rd, 2006 - Phoenix, AZ

In a word: incredible. The stage didn't have very much of a set up. just instruments like everywhere. but their video screen took up the entire height and length of the stage. it was freaking huge. and their were sparks and explosions and stuff. They played beasically all the great floyd songs.

set 1:

1. In the Flesh

2. Mother

3. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

4. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I - V) (abridged)

5. Have a Cigar

6. Wish You Were Here

7. Southampton Dock

8. The Fletcher Memorial Home

9. Perfect Sense, Parts 1 and 2

10. Leaving Beirut

11. Sheep

opening with 'in the flesh' and 'mother' from the wall, it used animations from the wall movie. 'set controls for the heart of the sun' which i had never heard, was amazing. really great! lots of sparks and some fire. huge sun image on the screen. Then they went right on into 'shine on' which was amazing. 'Have a Cigar' bled into 'Wish You Were Here.' Lighters were up all over the place. The whole place was singing. Probably the best song of the set. 'Leaving Beirut' is a brand new song that Waters wrote this past year. It's really really good. and the video is done in a graphic novel style, which is really cool. During 'sheep' they brought out a huge pig balloon with anti-war messages on it and let it loose into the night sky. yes ts true, pigs can fly, and it probably still is.

Set 2 was the Dark Side of the Moon. In its entireity. And I simply cannot find the words to describe it. Wow. It was just..wow.

The encore was really awesome. It was a wall medley consisting of 'the happiest days of our lives','Another Brick in the Wall', and 'Comfortably Numb.'

Seriously, anyone who goes to this concert is in for a treat. A once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Those of you who had the chance to see all of Pink Floyd live together, I hope you did. Cause this was the closest thing that I will ever get. Unless they have a reunion tour. Which is unlikely but still possible. Their 50th anniversary is next year.

I saw him on the 6th of September. Glad you got to see him Roci.

Yes, the 3 female singers: Katie Kissoon, P.P. Arnold, & Carol Kenyon were VERY good. I think the one who sung Great Gig was P.P. Arnold, not sure on that though.
