Okay, after pouring through videos of shows from the tour, I feel pretty confident in most of these (unless he's switching on the same song from night to night, but I haven't noticed that in non-rotation setlist tracks so far). I took the bass descriptions from the tourbook. If anyone has corrections or new information, please let me know, and I'll update this post.

Also, I challenge the guitarists on the board to make a similar list for Alex. :) Model year might be harder to figure out, but the models and colours?

I think Hemispheres is the D standard tuned bass seen since 1996 and The Main Monkey Business bass is not a 1965 jazz (maybe the '72 blonde listed in equipment).

I think you're right. As soon as I put it up I realized it couldn't be the same bass on both, as Prelude was tuned down. Do you think it is the Fender Jazz Bass (Trans Red Custom Shop) one? I looked that up in Google Images and two pictures of Geddy playing what I think is the D-tuning one he used on Circumstances and 2112 before this tour. I'll look closer at TMMB (and others are welcome to as well), as I think you could be right there, too. The lighter coloured ones are so hard to pick out against the lighting.

Are they tuning down a whole step or a step and a half?

It sounds like just a step, but perhaps that needs to be checked.

Hmmn, you can't edit posts that are a couple of days old, it seems. Here are three tentative changes to the original post, based on conversations on this thread and looking closer at some video.

The Main Monkey Business - 1972 Fender Jazz Bass (Blonde)

Natural Science - 1968 Rickenbacker Model 4001 (BurgundyGlo)

Hemispheres: Prelude - Fender Jazz Bass (Trans Red Custom Shop)

I took pictures of every bass used in New Orleans, and I see 5 discrepancies from your initial post:

The Wreckers (not listed) is a Fender Jazz (white with tort pickguard, rosewood neck)

The Main Monkey Business was on a 1972 style Fender Jazz (White with tort pickguard, maple neck with black block inlays)

Between The Wheels was not a Precision - it was a Fender Jazz (White with white pickguard, rosewood neck)

The Spirit of Radio was the 1960 Fender Jazz Bass (Fiesta Red) - it had the concentric (stacked) knobs

Hemispheres was definitely the Custom Shop Fender Jazz (Bright translucent red with black pearl pickguard, maple neck with black block inlays)

Also note, the Rick 4080 Fireglo has seen most of the work so far this tour, but New Orleans was fortunate enough to see the old Jetglo!

It seems he's alternating the FireGlo and JetGlo doublenecks on Xanadu (JetGlo pic here).

Xanadu - 1978 Rickenbacker Model 4080/12 (FireGlo) / 1975 Rickenbacker Model 4080/12 (JetGlo)

Is his Jet Glo Ric a 77? Didn't he have it earlier than 77? Or did he leave the original home and bring a different one on tour? Anyone here remember seeing a natural Ric that was always photographed? You can see it in the Moving Pictures videos shot at Le Studio. Also, he's photographed with a white double neck in the MP tour book.

The 1975 date came from the list of his basses in the R40 tourbook. He's a bit OCD about collecting, so I would trust the date if it's not a typo.

I don't know the manufacture year of the white doubleneck, but I know the pic you mention. It's a 4080/6, I believe. I've never seen a picture of him playing it in concert, always just from that soundcheck photoshoot.

Geddy with the thunderbird looks.... wrong, somehow.

I thought that too. It looks funny on him. But then they are oddly shaped basses.

I am no expert on basses but that thunderbird model just doesnt seem to fit for songs like OLV/How It Is for me. Again I guess on any bass you shouldn't have drastic changes in sound, you are playing the same notes for that song maybe some differences in tone I guess? But still thunderbird just looks weird on him for OLV.

Could someone also help me understand how the double bass works exactly for Xanadu? I noticed on the new orleans video which is really good he plays the top part for most of it and I only saw him play the second part at the end I think. What exactly is the difference and is the whole thing more for show than anything? I imagine it would be since he played it fine on R30 with a normal bass.

The top part is a bass, the bottom is a guitar.

Geddy plays rhythm guitar while Alex does the outro solo. It does result in a fuller sound for that part of the song. It didn't matter for R30, because they played a truncated version that didn't have that part.

I must say that this was hard to discern even with all the pictures I took in New Orleans. And I had to refer back to the tour book listing, and its picture of the basses in the rack.

For instance, the Sonic Blue Jazz looked white in all my pics under the lighting (Sonic Blue is a very light blue, and in the tour book, it has a white pick guard). Also, the 1966 Fiesta Red Jazz listed in the tour book looks more like Candy Apple Red in all my pics. On a side note, the 1960 Fiesta Red Jazz definitely looks Fiesta Red in my pics.

So here it is: Every bass played at the New Orleans concert, as viewed through my camera eye... ;-)

This post is amaaaazing! So cool, thank you for doing all that work. It's so hard to pick out some of the colours under the lights.

Also, I'm glad to know I'm not the only person so obsessive about this stuff. :D

You are welcome... and yes, I am all about that bass, 'bout that bass - no treble! ;) :D
