I don't think lyrically it's about anything specific. I always thought it was just words to create some imagery to go along with the music's atmosphere. Edited by J2112YYZ

From an article I seem to remember reading YEARS back, I think it has something to do with the sunlight that comes through the clouds that look like beams hitting the ground.

In the biblical book Genesis, Jacob dreamed of a ladder ascending to heaven. "Jacob's ladder" is therefore a name sometimes given to the aerial phenomena of sunlight streaming down between clouds. "The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams."

Jacob's Ladder is, unsurprisingly, about a jacob's ladder. The meaning is quite...ahem....transparent.

It's Rush's version of Stairway to Heaven. God I wish they'd stop ripping off Zeppelin.

See, I thought they were referring to the ladder Greg Lake asked for in ELP's "Still... You Turn Me On." ( ;) )

I don't think he ever got his ladder....

Jacob's Ladder is a perfect RUSH song to me ( .. one of many ;)

The lyrics are sparse and ambiguous enough to allow the music to paint part of the picture - it really takes me somewhere, unlike songs that have a very specific, overexplained meaning

It's about clouds fighting or some shit.. Ok seriously though I'll liken it to The Trees.. The message being that if you can't get along and chose to fight then you both suffer. The demise of the clouds however is not violent as is in The Trees with hachets and saws. The Storm clouds fade away peacefully by way of warm sun shining through..

Unless we're talking about Springstein's Version which I'm pretty sure is about some idiot climbing a stupid ladder. (As I typed that I was just reminded of Lifeson's bit in that SnA clip with the locked "cosmic door lol)

I actually just thought of all that stuff about the trees etc so I might be a little off but it's interesting.. I think the song is basically about finding hope amidst chaos under the metaphor of a weather phenomenon.. Neil loves doing that lol

I am not a betting man,

But I would bet on this tune. Easy on Geddy's voice and a fan favorite!! :D
