Until these last few years when I rediscovered Rush, I never could listen to Subdivisions. Couldn't stand it; had to do with the high school alienation theme, not the music. I thought the "be cool or be cast out" protest was overstating things excessively for dramatic effect and it bugged me (the reality I observed was be cool or be irrelevant/invisible; Neil really likes the "there's a mob about to get someone somewhere" narrative). Now I like it well enough seeing in this forum how the song connected to so many people; maybe it wasn't so overstated after all. Anyway, it was never the music, have always loved the first few chords on the keyboards, and Alex's guitar. So now I like half the album -- SD, TAK, NWM and LI, just have to come around on the other half. Close on The Weapon; uphill struggle with Countdown. I had just never aspired to be accepted by a-holes when I was younger (or now I hope), so if a certain group ignored me, or didn't think I was worth noticing, it didn't bother me; there were always plenty of regular, decent people to hang around. Bullying though is a different thing. Always felt bad for people who were actively ridiculed and such. Tried to stick up for them when/if it would help but it's like trying to catch water. The fact that bullying is so prevalent, and that so many people take their lives because of it, says that we are not a very advanced species as far as sympathy/empathy goes. Manifold other evidence for that premise of course, but bullying has always really irritated me because it's done by rancid little cowards.
