Segue Myles Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 As many of you have surely noticed, I am an absolute addict for AOR. The bigger the hair the happier I am. The cheesiest ballad is a sure fire hit in my collection. But considering many older fans here would have been around when AOR was at its peak, both artistically and commercially, I thought it was about time we had a thread dedicated to progs sexier, yet vacuous, little brother. My current favourite AOR bands (or pomp-rock, cheese rock, etc): TotoJourneyStyxKansasStrangewaysFleetwood Mac (post 1975)TrillionForeigner Let us all get the nerd on. I would love it if music like this could top the charts the world over all over again, I really love this genre. 1
The Analog Cub Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) Huge Styx fan here, though I don't do any of the pre-Equinox stuff. I especially love the J.Y. material like Miss America and Half-Penny Two Penny. A lot of DeYoung's stuff is too cheesy for me sometimes, especially post-Pieces of Eight, but Castle Walls and Queen Of Spades are musical brilliance. J.Y's a f***ing beast at guitar :haz: I don't really listen to any of those other bands (I absolutely loathe Fleetwood Mac), but everyone's heard Kansas and Journey. I like some Journey, particularly the heavier Schon-driven stuff like the title track off Escape, Stone In Love. Edge Of The Blade and Ask The Lonely. I would also put Queen in this category. Love Queen. Edited February 25, 2015 by BowlCity 1

Love Queen. I must admit, I too struggle with Dennis DeYoung, especially on Cornerstone. But everything about Paradise Theater blows my mind, I am a huge fan of that album! As for Fleetwood Mac, I could almost say the same thing about Queen (I do love one song of theirs though: The Show Must Go On). I am indifferent to Queen, and find them to be a pompous waste of time, and I cannot stand Freddie Mercury (shush everybody, you mock me for loving Springsteen!).
Segue Myles Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 And I prefer Styx first four albums to both Equinox and Crystal Ball.
The Analog Cub Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 And I prefer Styx first four albums to both Equinox and Crystal Ball. I always found the Wooden Nickel albums to suffer from Fly By Night syndrome, where there's no clear musical theme about them, and is just a hodgepodge of some good stuff, and some WTF is this stuff. Equinox was similar, but that was their 2112 where some really awesome stuff started coming out like Suite Madame Blue and Midnight Ride. I must admit, I too struggle with Dennis DeYoung, especially on Cornerstone. But everything about Paradise Theater blows my mind, I am a huge fan of that album! Cornerstone for me contends with Kilroy and beyond for "worst Styx album". Babe is very cringe worthy. Paradise Theater was a very solid effort, though most of the good songs were either J.Y's or Shaw's. I can understand the dislike of Queen.

Segue Myles Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 I don't think Queen are rubbish, I think they are great, but for whatever reason they do not work for me. I do think this has all to do with the fact that I do not like Mercury. I have never found him appealing, or his voice listenable (sorry). I do think they have many terrific songs, but I also HATE Bohemian Rhapsody.

Plus Brian May is a beast on that one :haz: 1

My best friend was a huge fan of theirs and what was popular at the time and didn't like "my music"....
Segue Myles Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Boston are incredible. I would also like to add Europe. They count. Love them!

Stormtron Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I would say this thread isn't for me, but I was just enjoying I-Ten's album and I'm sure that falls squarely into AOR territory.
bluefox4000 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 My first two AOR bands were Journey and Toto I will defend Toto till the day i die. Kansas is great and yes i believe they are AOR playing dress up as prog, lol Mick

bluefox4000 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I like boston too. One of the best debuts in AOR history. Mick 1
Segue Myles Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 I love Foreigner, and I would say this is because of their fantastic singles.
