Birds

Here are some of the birds I've seen at my back yard feeder. My house backs up to a vein of woods that runs through our subdivision, so I have huge mature oaks. I think that helps bring more birds to my yard.

Cardinals

Chickadees

Hairy Woodpecker (also get the smaller Downy woodpecker too)

Blue Jays

I had a pair of these one summer - Wood ducks

I also get these on my hummingbird feeder in summer

I also get tons of LBBs (little brown birds, robins, starlings, and red wing black birds). I've seen occasional hawks. I've never seen them, but I've head countless owls hooting behind my house at night. One night we had a screech owl. That was a horrible sound! :)

whippoorwill (never seen em, they are nocturnal and are very well camoflauged)

When I was a kid, the family would go camping at a nearby campgrounds with other families. We had one of those classic Starcraft campers, and every night, at least one damned whippoorwill would be close by, singing ALL NIGHT LONG..... :rage: :rage: I didn't sleep a wink...... :rage: :rage:

That sounds like our magpies--"3am? Sure, I think I will start singing now and not stop for hours!"

My brother lived in a little cabin a couple miles out of town, had tin siding and roof, and a huge canopy of old oak trees. There was a whipoorwill that lived in one of the trees right next to the cabin, you could hear him all night in the summer clear as a bell. He told me he would pay me 100 bucks if I could shoot it, but neither of us ever saw it.

Not necessarily bird related, but one night his cat caught a flying squirrel. Had no idea we had them around here, they are nocturnal as well

Magpies? Singing? They sound like they've been murdered!

I have a VERY strong connection to birds. they have a tremendous amount of meaning to me. different birds have different meanings. i have bird feeders at home & work. I have a book - Bird of Michigan. Over the years i've marked the ones i've seen with a post-it and dated when sighted. Once in a while i can capture photos. not as much as i used to.

TROUTMAN. remember when i had the cardinal family right outside my window & I'd film and photograph them for you? :)

i saw a cardinal this morning on my way to work. such a beautiful stark red colour in the winter white sunny morning. It's one of my all time favourite birds. It is said when a cardinal comes around it is a sign from a loved one who has passed. :)

Saturday i was leaving work and there was this HUGE swarm of birds close to me. it seemed like there were MILLIONS of them, flying in sync with each other, and even more in the trees chirping away. it took my breath away it was so f***ing awesome. i stood there for a few minutes in awe of the sight. most often when i see that i'm in the car driving. it's rare i take the opportunity to sit and be in-joy of the experience.

of the many amazing experiences, the photo i'm about to share is one of my all time favourites. This guy i named Bob.

It is a Sand Hill Crane. I have a family of three that hang out at my work. They love to eat the bird seed out of the feeder. i used to keep it close to my office window. I would film them often. I was particularly happy with this capture. i felt like i was so busted !!! ha ha ha.

very spiritual beings. i love them. all of 'em.

Ever see their mating dance? Its hysterical!!!! My parents had a pair that was hanging out behind their house. The would right up to their patio door, and pick a fight with the reflection on the door. They would hear someone pounding on their patio door, and go and look, and there was a crane pecking at the glass patio door. Those things were a riot!

Kildeer

Again, captured at my workplace.

I love Killdeer. I always know when it's spring when I hear them out in the fields with their very distinctive call.

Look at that guy! Reminds me on this guy who hangs around my house every day:

He forages out in the front yard in the morning, then moves to the back yard, often stopping to peer into my back door before disappearing into the woods for the day.

I'm surprised there's only one. Around here it's not unusual to see a dozen or more in a flock. Had a couple of them in my front yard a few days ago and I thought that was unusual to only see two.
