Riv
QUOTE (Cygnus @ Aug 3 2005, 05:05 AM) Hey Jack or Riv, Is the desert eagle all its cracked up to be? It is a little bulky like Jack said, but it is really fun to shoot. Really kicks. However, it is also really expensive to shoot - a buck a shot for the rounds. I don't believe there are too many practical applications, though. I wouldn't want to shoot anybody with it if I had to clean up the mess. Especially if you have neighbors close because it will probably just keep going through walls. Oh, I forgot - I pulled the lanyard on a howitzer once. Now there's some "enthusiasm" for ya. Rushgoober: quit being so damn sensitive. You act like a little girl.

Arndrake
My dad is a real gun enthusiast. He grabbed a bunch when the former Eastern Bloc was clearing out their arsenals. He really wanted a Dragunov sniper rifle, but could never get the money for one. I have had the chance to shoot: Savage falling block single shot .22 (my first gun) A very light 12 guage (knocked me down when I was 8, bruised my shoulder too) .243 CAR-15 (civilian version of M-16) Russian SVT-40 (cool weapon, wicked looking too, WWII infantry and sniper rifle) Chinese SKS Czech AK-47 44 Magnum (now THAT'S power) I think the rarest weapons my father owns are a .218B (which is considered illegal now because of the small caliber) and a 17th century French muzzle loader pistol my grandfather obtained as heirlooms for my father and uncles. war2112
QUOTE (physics23 @ Aug 2 2005, 01:48 PM) Firearms are an exciting world. Yes, they're associated with killing and maiming, but that only accounts for a small portion of their applications in the world. If your initial reaction to the title of this topic is to recoil in disgust, you probably represent the majority of people in the world; guns have been responsible for incalculable loss of life. But that is not the point of this thread. The point is to appreciate their power, their elegance, their ingenuity, their diversity. So... What have you handled? Man, I totally missed out on this thread. I don't know how, but I did. I was AWOL for awhile so that's probably when you sent this topic up or otherwise I would have been an active participant. Time to make up for lost time. What have I handled? Not nearly as much as I would like. I only own two firearms. My pride and joy is a Remington 700 BDL Deluxe chambered in .223 Remington. It is super accurate and the Remington 700 action is widely considered to be the best in the world. The U.S. Marine Corps uses this action as the basis for their sniper rifle and many custom gunmakers do so as well. I handload my own ammo and take particular joy in doing so. I also own a Marlin 60SB chambered for the .22 LR round. This is my "fun" gun for plinking at tin cans. I do have 2 BB guns, a pump rifle and CO2 powered pistol. Other than my own firearms, I have shot my dad's Winchester 12-gauge and his sweet, sweet 1952 vintage Winchester .22 LR. I once had the opportunity to fire a .50 BMG at the range one time. That was quite an experience. I split an old washing machine in two with it. Great topic.
war2112
QUOTE (Alsgalpal @ Aug 2 2005, 01:59 PM) I like the Berretta. The largets I have handled is a Thirty ott six. (spelling) I think I felt my hair fly back on that one, and I took a limb off a tree. I had the hugest bruise on my shoulder, even tho I held it tight to me. I enjoy shooting. You go girl! A .30-06 (thirty aught six in case you are interested - you were real close on your phonetic spelling) is a handful for anyone. I'm proud of you AGP; a lot of women would really be put off by the recoil from this cartridge. Hey, a lot of men would be too. Especially in a lighter weight rifle - it can kick like a mule. BTW, just a bit of history because I'm a geek. It's called a .30-06 because it is .30 caliber developed in 1906. God help the man that tries to mess with you!! war2112
QUOTE (Riv @ Aug 2 2005, 02:14 PM) Oh boy..... I've handled: many different .22 's since a kid 4 different models of Glock Desert Eagle .50 m16 a2 m16 a4 .50 cal machine gun MK-19 automatic grenade launcher M240 Golf M249 SAW 2 different AK-47 models (Chinese and Russian) AK-74 M-1 M-14 Colt 9mm SMG And I "handle" a Berreta 9mm - Browning 870 12 gauge and an M-4 DAILY I probably skipped a dozen or so weapons. Riv, I'm jealous but you probably knew that. Of all the weapons you have used, the one that I would most like to have the opportunity to fire would probably be the SAW. The weapon from earlier years I would most like to fire if not own (don't I wish) would be the MP-38 or MP-40. You know essentially the same weapon except that the MP-40 is the later iteration without the stamped steel receiver. Unfortunately, they are very, very rare. I have only seen one at the Patton Museum in Fort Knox and I had to wipe my slobber off of the display case.
