Nothing great to be found on this album, just a lot of "very nice" monents.

I do love the title track though.

Apparently Heresy is for the 5000+ IQ Club, which I'm a proud member of.

I'm shocked at the number of people who love Bravado but hate Heresy :huh:

Lyrically and musically and thematically they're very different tunes. "Bravado" has so much more pathos and authenticity. "Heresy" is Neil bitching about things.

Some of Roll the Bones sounds like it was influenced by Billy Joe's Stormfront.

Those repeating lines in You Bet Your Life remind me of We Didn't Start the Fire.

Heresy recalls Leningrad for me a little and maybe some other track (maybe And So It Goes).

Ghost of a Chance has lyrics "state of grace" which is a track on Stormfront.

I don't know why but the album has a similar vibe to me.

Storm Front was released in October 1989 and was a huge poppy hit and Roll the Bones was an effort at being poppy released in 1991...

Take what you will from this.

Roll The Bones sounds like the moment Geddy, Alex and Neil lost their testicles.

Its a good album, but they rocked the socks off us all with Hemispheres.

With Roll The Bones, they couldn't even rock the pants off a nudist.

Agreed, minus the "good" part :)

Good, but mediocre good, not "better than most" good like CA.

Then again, RTB was Rush's biggest splash on the charts since PW. In fact, I remember being in college then and some chick looking at my RTB shirt and saying something like, "You're wearing a Rush "Roll the Bones" shirt. How original is that?" The implication being that a lot of people were doing the exact same thing at the time. No Rush album after that until probably CA made that big of a cultural impact.

Interesting because I think both you mentioned pretty much suck but for very different reasons....

I mean, with such erudite and socially telling lyrics as "All the crap we had to take" illustrating the millions of lives destroyed by Soviet misguidance, it's no wonder "Heresy" is such a genius of a tune.

Yeah thats a rough lyric for sure. Bad.

*Dreamline*: 13/15

Bravado: 9/15

Roll The Bones: 11/15

Face Up: 4/15

Where's My Thing?: 10/15

The Big Wheel: 6/15

Heresy: 8/15

Ghost Of A Chance: 9/15

<Neurotica>: 2/15

You Bet Your Life: 5/15

I will never like this form of ratings.

Makes no sense. Trying to explain it will prove my point.

What part of it makes no sense?

The best song gets *asterisks*

The worst song gets <brackets>

Other standouts get italics

Particularly bad tracks (in comparison to the rest) get blue text

Or is it the "out of 15" thing that you don't get? I posted the rubric on TOST... then again nobody ever goes there...

15: Flawless

14: Near flawless

12-13: Great

11: Very good

9-10: Good

7-8: Mediocre

4-6: Bad

2-3: Awful

0-1: Beyond awful

Analogues out of 10:

10 = 14-15

9 = 12-13

8 = 10-11

7 = 8-9

6 = 6-7

5 = 4-5

4 = 3

3 = 2

2 = 1

1 = 0

However, since I only really use these on artists I like, it tends to be much more even rather than 85% of songs getting crammed into 4 rating places.

This is kinda why...

A scale of 1 - 10 makes perfect sense. Why complicate it?

Because, as I said, since I only really rate artists I like, 85% of songs would likely get crammed into 4 ratings (6/7/8/9). Here, there's much more "breathing room" and ratings are less ambiguous (For example I would often enjoy one 8 quite a bit more than another, while now most 11s are about the same)

This is my least favorite album with only one track that I like...Bravado

Every so often I put this record on so that I can give it another try to see if time allows for any change in perspective. Unfortunately, there is no change. I can't stand most of it, care little for some of it, and like one tune. If they were to switch Superconductor for Bravado, Presto would rise on my list of favorites and Roll the Bones would gather dust.
