cameraman2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Which is better? The studio version? The live version? Which live version? I always thought it'd be interesting to hear others' takes on which version of Rush songs were their favorites. I have my favorites that I always go to for certain songs, what about all of you guys? I'll give an example using all of PeW The Spirit of Radio - Time Machine Tour Freewill - Time Machine Tour Jacob's Ladder - Studio version Entre Nous - Studio version Different Strings - Studio version (No live recordings of this I believe) Natural Science - Snakes and Arrows Live I'm sorry if this has already been done on another thread. I am just curious about other fellow Rush fans out there!

WorkingAllTheTime Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 An interesting question... I know it's a bit of a polarizing song (apparently particularly for the band), but my son absolutely loves CTTH and he and I have discussed the various live versions of it over the years. My favorite has always been from ASOH because it draws from my "era", but he loves the faster, harder jam session from Different Stages. He and I both agree the versions they put out on recent tours were a bit of a let down (given the band had previously set a pretty high threshold for how they end the song). Still, it's an interesting exercise in evolution to listen to the various live versions of CTTH... the generally straight-forward approach on Exit Stage Left... to extended soft melodic ending on the g/p live disc.... to the grooving end on ASOH... to the Geddy-trying-to-blow-the-doors-off-the-venue bass work on Different Stages... then back to something less dramatic starting with Rio.

Lorraine Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Cameraman, I am curious as to why you think the R30 Xanadu is better than the Exit...Stage Left. 3

cameraman2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Cameraman, I am curious as to why you think the R30 Xanadu is better than the Exit...Stage Left. I was almost afraid to admit it :smoke: I'm starting to gravitate towards Geddy's older singing voice. And I like the modern take on the song. Wish it was longer though! :cheerleader: 1

bluefox4000 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 2 i can think of right now Mission-Snakes live. That guitar solo though  People always say ASOH version is better. yet they seem to have amnesia about the superior version. Time stands Still-ASOH CD Improves a great tune a billion times over. Mick

Lorraine Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Who said we had to limit it to official releases? Bootlegs are also applicable!2112 from Passaic 1976 is awesome! I think more than a few of the bootlegs are better than the official releases of live shows.
EagleMoon Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 For the most part if the production on an album is good, I prefer the studio versions. But if it's something like Presto or Roll the Bones, a lot of time the bootlegs or official live releases might be better.
Anthemic Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 i can't think of any rush songs that aren't better live.
