I don't like the fact that in this day and age. nothing is scared, if this was in 1982, we never might not have known about it, or little article and that's it. I didn't like that dude following him with a camera. I know al must have been pissed about that..

Rush doesn't have much good luck in Fla . Anyone here remember or was at the Hollywood Sportatorium show when the riot broke out? I think it was Permanent Waves tour. As far as Florida people being the rudest well ....OH I don't know . I mean I grew up in Ft Laud area and yah I guess Fla has it's share of jerks.I've seen some seriously effed up stuff during those famous 1980's spring breaks off Ft Laud beach. Not from the police but from the people there. Still it was generally known not to give the Ft Laud city police any grief . I'm just surprised none of those Naples officers even recognized Alex. I mean how can you not know one of the greatest guitarist of all times? And even if he was a little tipsy does it warrant the abuse? NO!

Big al, is one of the most underrated guitarists ever. hes really a good player. but gets no crops or respect in that manner, and I hate that. cause hes so better than a lot of overrated guitar players...

Neil says in his book that Florida Police in general are by far the worst in America and I believe him. He also says that Florida people in general are the rudest by percentage, but there are still 9 good ones for every bad one. Can't comment on that as I've never visited the State.

Having grown up in the north east and moving to Florida 30 years ago, I tend to agree with Neil.

As a whole, the cops are alright, but there are many who are just savages, liars, and criminals with badges and guns. There are countless stories of bad cops here.

And rude people, yeah, there's tons of those as well as anywhere I suppose.

I've thought about this a lot and there are a few reasons for this, the main being that Florida is a transient state where people are coming and going all the time. Just like I did, people from all over the USA, Canada, and the world grow up somewhere else and then move here for whatever reason, a job, retirement, the climate, school etc...But they still call the place they grew up "home". It's like we're all on a permanent vacation here, visiting and just waiting to go back home.

In many cases people will move here, live in one place for a while and then move away, often times to other parts of the state and in many across just across town as new neighborhoods, and entire cities are being built like anthills.

I've said this to many people but if you haven't been here for a while or you live in other places, other than Florida, you simply cannot comprehend the scope of the development that has gone on down here in the last 40 years.

The point is, there is very little or no sense of community here with little camaraderie as few consider the place they've moved to, "home" and few consider their neighbors, "friends" but more like strangers living next door.

That's not to say it's like that everywhere, it's not. There are great communities everywhere here, but the "this is not home" atmosphere pervades.

This leads to one thing. People don't care about each other. I'll get mine and it's up to you to get yours is an underlying theme in living here. Get it while you can and at any expense, anyhow because it might not be there long and whoever did get it won't be around long either. This seems to hold true, some more than in others, to most people, teachers, cops, beauticians, lawyers right on down the line.

The other thing is that people by the tens of millions come here to simply visit, they call another place home and they intend to go back in a very short time. "Community" isn't even a thought and they have an even shorter amount of time to "get theirs", they are scrambling even harder and faster to get all they can while they can.....So get out of the way!!!! Millions of people looking out for themselves only, and trying to grab as much of what little there is in as little time as possible leads to rudeness on a whole new level.

Quieter only because the average age is about 87.......

From wikipedia:

Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, with the sixth highest per capita income in America,[5] and the second highest proportion of millionaires per capita in the US.[6] Real estate is among the most expensive in the country, with houses for sale in excess of $40 million.

What Neil Peart says about the incident from his book Roadshow:

tirade about the Florida law enforcement, KKK, ect.) In 2004, my band mate Alex was living through a more recent bad experience with the Florida law enforcement. Earlier that year, a horrible, nightmarish encounter had left him severely battered, bloody, and facing serious felony charges. He and Charlene had bought a holiday home in a luxury property in Naples, Florida, and on a previous New Year's Eve, they attended a black-tie event at the neighboring Ritz Carlton hotel, with their son Justin and his wife Michelle. They were all having a wonderful time, enjoying a great meal and dancing wildly to the live band. Just after midnight, while the band was taking a break, Justin stepped up on the band platform to wish his wife a Happy New Year over the microphone. A grumpy keyboard player called hotel security to have him removed.

When they tried to escort him off the property, Alex stood up and told the security goons his son wasn't going anywhere. They decided to call the local sheriff's department. When the deputies arrived they dragged Alex and Justin into a stairwell, out of sight of witnesses (well they thought) and security cameras. They started beating on Justin, shoving him down the stairs, and Alex, like any father, tried to intercede and defend his son-who was guilty; after all, of taking into a microphone.

In a nightmarish few seconds of unbelievable violence, Alex and Justin were both brutally beaten and shot with Tazer guns, 10 times altogether. Alex found himself face down on the landing in a pool of his own blood, his nose broken, then he was cuffed and hauled away to jail. In growing horror and disbelief he was held for the worst two days of his life and charged with several felony offenses of assault against the deputies. He faced not only automatic prison time, but felony conviction that would ban him from the United States forever.

(…tirade about Alex's treatment at the hands of the Florida constabulary and other comments.) A year later, a witness finally came forward to corroborate Alex and Justin's story, as reported in the local Naples newspaper (which had, unbelievably, published actual his home address in its first story about the incident). A former employee at the hotel said that he had seen the way Alex and Justin were treated, and that it had been, "extreme police brutality." He also testified that it had been the female deputy who had thrown Alex down the stairs: "She grabbed him by the throat and he went falling backward."

As someone who has transplanted to Florida. Remember- Most people from Florida are from somewhere else.

It's just the makeup of the state.

Most people here are good. I have been in Alex's shoes, drunk and loud, thankfully those days are 20 years behind me.

Now I am a quiet, older very observant asshole. So I guess I am now a TRUE Floridian.

One little but important detail I recall reading was that the tazer was used on Justin first, while Alex was watching.

That's when Alex flipped the f*ck out, which is what any parent would do if they saw their child being hit with 50,000 volts.

I cant remember where I read it but I recall after this incident Big Al unloaded that swanky condo in Naples. I do recall something about him buying a house in Arizona but never heard anything else about it. If I was him I would keep it under wraps also after seeing what happened to Neil's California home. I am curious about the kick ass houses my favorite musicians live in but it is kinda creepy when you consider that with just a search engine you can find the exact addresses.

Yeah I bet Neil was pissed about his address becoming public, thought Mosbach was supposed to deal with that kind of thing! Alex doesn't seem so worried about privacy, there was a feature about his new countryside home North of Toronto somewhere! Edited by New Digital Man
