True, the original on Fly By Night sounds like a demo and wasn't fully realized (same absolutely goes for the original "By-tor"), but the version on ATWAS absolutely KILLS!!! So does "By-tor!" The version of that on ATWAS is one of the best things Rush EVER recorded...both of those songs on ATWAS are spine-tinglingly greatness that could raise deceased puppies from the dead and deliver them to 3rd world orphans who would otherwise drown in a sea of hatred and oppression! No seriously though. I'm being serious. I've givien this song so many chances. All i could think of is things i'd rather be doing. Not saying i'm right. If you take pleasure in ole Hemispheres. Go for it. But not for me. That's all. Mick I believe you. I really do. Bottom 10? I am not a huge jazz fan. Pretty cool at first and then bores me... BUT I respect it because I can hear the musicianship and appreciate it. What I do not, and will never, understand is how you cannot appreciate the gloriousness of the instrumental work, the precision, the intermingling of the bass and guitar, the dynamics and the 20 minute metaphor. The original on Fly By Night does in relation to the live version on ATWAS; the studio version just sounds a bit stiff and not fully realized yet; it breathes and builds exponentially on ATWAS. The idea was there on Fly By Night, but it just wasn't NEARLY as successful as the live version. Songs I write never really feel finished - not that I play them live or anything, but once they're recorded I always think of other things I could do with them. Since Rush in the early days were writing in the back seat of the car in between gigs and taking 8 days to record an album, it's hardly surprising that the songs might seem a bit unrealized...and I'd wager a lot of the tunes are the better for it - not too overthunk.
