Best guitar on each album

Not sure if this thread has been done before, but I figured I'd start it anyways. Pretty straightforward: what's the best guitar sound/song on each album. In your opinion of course (unless it disagrees with mine ;) )

(As usual posting only the albums I've listened to )

Rush: ...Working Man for the riff, but if you ignore Alex's less experienced earlier style the whole album is great for guitar!

2112: 2112, namely the solos in Presentation, Soliloquy, and Grand Finale, but I love the start of Something For Nothing

AFTK: Xanadu (for the intro)

Hemispheres: La Villa Strangiato (was there ever any question?)

PeW: The Spirit Of Radio

MP: Red Barchetta

Signals: The Analog Kid

P/G: Between The Wheels

PoW: Territories/Middletown Dreams

HYF: Turn The Page/Open Secrets/Lock And Key

...

CA: Clockwork Angels (that guitar entrance is still the most amazing sound on the album to me)

Rush: Working Man

Fly By Night: By-Tor

Caress of Steel: The Fountain of Lamneth

2112: The Grand Finale

A Farewell To Kings: The beginning of Xanadu, A Farewell To Kings

Hemispheres: La Villa Strangiato (all of it), the instrumental break in The Trees

Permanent Waves: Guitar solo in Freewill, The Spirit of Radio (all of it), Hyperspace in Natural Science

Moving Pictures: Limelight and Red Barchetta

Signals: The Analog Kid

Grace Under Pressure: Between The Wheels

Power Windows: Marathon and Middletown Dreams

Hold Your Fire: Lock and Key :haz: (especially the ASOH version)

Presto: Presto

Roll The Bones: Dreamline's guitar solo with all the delay and whammy bar usage :D

Counterparts: The whole flipping album. More specifically the solo in Cut To The Chase, then Double Agent and Cold Fire :D

Test For Echo: Test For Echo, Time and Motion :haz: Virtuality :haz: Totem guitar solo

Vapor Trails: Ceiling Unlimited, Secret Touch, Earthshine

Snakes and Arrows: The Main Monkey Business, Armor and Sword

Clockwork Angels: The Anarchist, Headlong Flight, but the best one is probably the solo in The Garden. Very beautiful.

Good thread!

Wow, it took me forever after posting the thread to actually come up with a list myself. A lot harder than I thought! Even in the background in the mid eighties, Alex never ceases to stand out.

Alex never ceases to stand out.

He always stands out, and it is always Alex that draws me into the music. Always.

Sounds like someone's got a slight crush on Lerxst. :P

No. I'm too old to have a crush on an equally old rocker. But his guitar wraps itself around my soul. In all of my decades of listening to music, no other guitarist - ever - has affected me like Alex.

And you question your music appreciation. You appreciate music just fine, sister.

Rush: What You're Doing - LOVE that solo! As someone else said already though, the guitar is really great on this whole album.

Fly By Night: By-Tor and the Snowdog

Caress of Steel: The Necromancer, OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!

2112: 2112, although Lessons is a very close 2nd.

A Farewell To Kings: Xanadu

Hemispheres: Impossible to choose between La Villa Strangiato (best guitar solo EVER!), and Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, which holds some of Alex's key signature guitar riffs.

Permanent Waves: Natural Science

Moving Pictures: Limelight - another of Alex's signature sounds

Signals: I have to go with The Weapon - the solo is some of the most inventive playing I've ever heard (that actually sounds good!), but Analog Kid is a very close 2nd.

Grace Under Pressure: Afterimage

Power Windows: Emotion Detector

Hold Your Fire: Open Secrets

Presto: Show Don't Tell

Roll The Bones: I withhold my vote on this one for now since I haven't listened to this album in quite some time.

Counterparts: Cut To The Chase

Test For Echo: I withhold my vote on this one for now since I haven't listened to this album in quite some time.

Vapor Trails: I withhold my vote on this one for now since I haven't listened to this album in quite some time.

Snakes and Arrows: The Main Monkey Business,

Clockwork Angels: Headlong Flight - though The Anarchist and Halo Effect are right up there as well.

I am absolutely stunned at how much I agree with Rush Are Awesome and Bowl City on this one!

Same here. I think a lot of that has to do with his choice of phrasing. He never plays what you think he would play in a given song. Other guitarists play it safe but he never has. His solos especially teeter on the edge of falling into oblivion but they never quite do. That's what keeps his guitar work so special, fresh and new sounding.

Good choices, I agree with most of these. I think it's funny you put "Hope" for SnA. I'd probably go with Main Monkey Business or The Way the Wind Blows. For CA I gotta go with Caravan or BU2B. Most absurd choice is What You're Doing above Working Man. That f***ing riff, man! It's goddamned iconic! There are some others I'd disagree with but not as strongly.

Lol, I went with What You're Doing as well! No doubt Working Man is the obvious choice, and a classic for sure, but I guess I feel the same way about it as Tom Sawyer. And What You're Doing is a truly great song that gets no recognition whatsoever. That solo is one of my all-time favorites…. :haz:
