I went with Xanadu - 2112 a close second.

I wouldnt consider Natural Science one of the epics, but it is phenomenal!

Hemispheres to me is excellent, but lyrically overrated IMO

:o

It's a metaphorical masterpiece! The internal struggle over logic and passion being displayed as a battlefield only to be resolved in balance!

Once upon a time i would have said Xanadu. Now it's La Villa. Man what a well written tune. Put that on a loop i'm a happy guy. May also be they're best closing track.

I agree, its excellent, its just not as much my style. Lyrically is about moderation. I prefer lyrics for Xanadu, 2112 and Cygnus X-1, in that they are more personal, about an individual.

Hemispheres from a musical point..it transitions very well from section to section and there are recurring themes and variations on said themes.

I'll agree in that the song is my least fav epic. Side 2 of that album though is sheer brilliance

I think me and you are on the same page. They really, really went to far on this track, and as magnificent as it is in parts, it fails to sustain my interest comfortably, and tarnishes an album that has at least one perfect side!

AFTK amd PeW were much better bookends.

In no way am I saying Hemispheres is poor. But if I was to rank every one of the epics, it would probably come last...

I wish you all had played it at some point. The musicianship on that album is second to none. The interplay of the guitar bass and vocals... I just wish you could all appreciate it more.

Your assignment for the weekend is to write a song equal to Hemispheres and report back here on Monday with the results.

Good one.

Believe me i've tried.......it just doesn't hold my attention. Side 2 gets a little overplayed by me though. I appreciate that the title track resonates with so many people though.

Oh I definitely agree! On a technical level, Hemispheres is phenomenal and hard to fault. Its beautifully constructed, and in the right frame of mind it can blow my mind. But, if we talk about a Rush song, not in terms of their art, but their entertainment value, Hemispheres is not as captivating as Xanadu, 2112 or even a shorter "epic" like Red Barchetta.

When I say its my least favourite epic, bear in mind I love all of them very much! But Hemispheres is not close to being my favourite Rush album, purely because I prefer the second side a great deal more.
