The new-look NHL will begin with teams conducting buy-outs of the big contracts and the Flyers are the first out of the gate as John LeClair and Tony Amonte will be let go and become unresticted free agents as Flyers begin to clear salary space...

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings placed defenseman Derian Hatcher and forwards Darren McCarty and Ray Whitney on waivers Monday, effectively cutting ties with the three high-profile veterans.

If the players go unclaimed, the Red Wings have the option of buying out their contracts and making them unrestricted free agents.

Hatcher's contract calls for a salary of $4.94 million this season, Whitney is due $2.66 million and McCarty $1.71 million.

"They've been a big, big part of our franchise," Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill said. "This is just a part of doing business right now with the new CBA."

MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Monday that the club will not exercise the 2005-06 team option on the contracts of defenseman Patrice Brisebois and forward Gavin Morgan.

Well from what I've been hearing (as confirmed on ESPN Radio's Pittsburgh channel) the Pens are going to try to get Chris Osgood, but if Curtis Joseph is released, they'll go after him so they can have somebody to help mentor Fleury. They're also supposedly going to get Alexie Kovalev back. The rumors of them going after Ziggy Palfy were shot down as well. They did hint that they'll get at least one more big name foreward as well to compliment Lemieux and Recchi. If anything though, we need to concentrate on getting some more solid defensmen.

DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Avalanche retained the rights to forwards Milan Hejduk and Alex Tanguay, but missing from the list Thursday were possible free agents Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote.

Forsberg is one of the best players in the league (some say he's THE best). I can't see Colorado letting him slip away, no matter what he costs.

What I've been hearing on the Foresberg deal is to look at Colorado at the last minute to ink something up with him. If they do release him though, there's a good possibility that he and fellow free agent Markus Naslund are going to ship themselves around the NHL as a duo; meaning if you make an offer to Foresberg, you better make one to Naslund as well, or he won't accept it.
