I've been pulling my hair out of my head all day trying to load the pages so I can get the complete list. No dice.

But it does say that this July marks their 40th anniversary of being together. I bet a big announcement will be forthcoming regarding their future plans in July.

To all tvise saying this list is valueless, for Petes sake this is a beautifully written and researched collection if opinions! I disagree with chunks if it...but I was pleased to read this.

Still CoS deserves a top ten spot.

I disagree with some of his rankings (VT, Presto and Cp higher, Hemi, FBN and AFTK lower) but it's also just about the most thoroughly explained and reasoned list I've ever seen, so I respect him for putting so much effort into it.

Best thing is he embraces Rush's changes in musical direction, rather than whining "Why don't they sound like Album X anymore?"

Truth is kenny and I are two peas in the same pod...except for the Squire appreciation. He's got "issues" there

Oh, I have issues, believe me.

Please TM, throw me your favorite bass line from CS. I'm sure much like Rush, it ain't gonna be their biggest hit. Help me like this guy!

Note, for me to love it it's gonna have to be melodic.

I for one, like his work on Heart of the Sunrise, though I'm not really into Yes. Too much happy elf music.

Eh? What are you talking about and who are you referring to? Surely not anyone here!

Thanks to the extreme kindness and courtesy of a member here, I was able to read several of his reviews. It is obvious that he loves Rush. Like some here, I disagree with his assessment of some albums, but he did have this to say about the greatest song in the musical universe:

As mildly intriguing as the sci-fi epic "Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage" is, it's dwarfed by the towering "Xanadu." Opening with a gorgeous, abstract intro of synth drones, playful guitar notes, wood blocks, bells, and chirping birds, the Coleridge-referencing "Xanadu" transports the listener into fantasy territory, and when Lifeson's repeated arpeggio riff kicks in, the feeling is positively cinematic. When the song kicks into gear at the three-minute mark, it's clear the band has never sounded this musically complex and concise. Lifeson's guitar playing is multihued, Peart's fills are increasingly busy, and Lee's synths become a focal point for the first time in the band's career. Yet as instrumentally challenging it is, as unorthodox in structure, it's a relentlessly catchy piece of work, matching "2112" step for step, albeit in half the time.

Even more impressive would be how Rush pulled off a song like "Xanadu" in a live setting, with Peart behind his increasingly elaborate kit, Lifeson on double-necked 12 and six-string guitar, and Lee on double-necked four-string bass and 12-string guitar, not to mention his Minimoog synth and bass pedals....

The "towering Xanadu"! That says it all!

Boring list. I cant tell you how many times I have seen such a similarly I ordered list near the top, and then to place Test For Echo, Permanent Waves, and especially Power Windows where they are on his list are travesties.

To be honest, I like the fact PeW is lower than most, in fact I like al this list. Because it feels genuine! Should there be any reason to criticise the jugement that one prefers seven other albums over PeW?

Refreshing.

I think I have Permanent Waves at my #8 as well. Though I think out of my 19, I love albums 1-9, with Snakes and Arrows being my 9.

How about "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" from the 'Fragile' album? I also really like "Heart of the Sunrise" as someone else already mentioned (also from 'Fragile') but I would say that "the Fish" is more melodic. All of that said, I agree that Squire is overrated, although it sounds as though I like him a bit more than you do. I have some friends who still consider him the best rock bass player ever, but as far as I'm concerned he pales in comparison to Geddy Lee.

squire sounds killer - yes has plenty of melody, you don't hear it because you don't like the stuff.

your beefs with squire are: "his playing isn't THAT difficult" "his basslines lack melody" come on, how about "it doesn't click with me"? nothing wrong with that

talkin to ken by the way

Which song would this be??

" making fun of their friends in KISS in a song in 1975"

Was wondering the same myself. "ITIGB for Gene?.....

That would make sense...and help me make more sense of that song! Have never heard before that it was written in that vein.

In a 2004 interview, Geddy Lee explained: "We were touring a lot with Kiss in those days, and they had a song called 'I think I'm goin' Blind [just goin' blind].' So we were talking the piss out of that title by just coming up with this. Pratt (a nickname for Neil Peart) came up with this line, 'I think I'm going bald,' because Alex is always worried about losing his hair, even when he was not losing his hair. So he would try all kinds of ingredients to put on his scalp. And I think it just got Neil thinking about aging, even though we weren't aging yet and had no right to talk about that kind of stuff yet. It would be much more appropriate now. And it just became a kind of funny song, even though the song is not funny, in terms of sentiment, it kind of is, and the music is really goofy. A lot of people mistake us for being deadly serious, but some of our songs are just plain goofy."
