Synopsis

Rush-A decent first eforrt with some strong tunes and some garbage mixed in. Not as bad as many say...

Fly by Night- A pretty consistent album. No classics IMO, but not a bad song on the album

Caress of Steel-Hit and miss album. Some truly genius stuff here and some really awkward, hokey stuff.

2112-The best epic, and such an important album in the band's history. Side 2 has some skips, keeping it from 5 stars

A Farewell to Kings-Gave us Cygnus X-1, Closer to the Heart and Xanadu, 3 Rush classics, but the rest of the album is meh

Hemispheres-Rush starting their 3 album run of near perfection. Not a single wasted second on this album

Permanent Waves-My favorite album. Classics like Spirit, Freewill, epics like Jacob, Natural Science, and even Entre Nous is a great song

Moving Pictures-Thought about dropping it a notch for Withch Hunt, but the other stuff is so good, I have to say 5 stars

Signals-Not a big fan. Outside of Subdivisions and Analog Kid, I dont think there's much memorable

Grace-Better than Signals and the best of their synth 80's albums. Kid Gloves is one of my favorites

Hold Your Fire- Not good. Mission and Force Ten are great songs though

Presto-Hack job courtesy of Rupert Hine

Roll the Bones-Much better than Presto. Some clunkers, but Dreamline, Roll the Bones, and Where's my thing are awesome songs

Counterparts-Almost went with 5, but as great an album as this is, I can't quite out it with the 3 classics. But this album is among the best. Double Agent, Animate, and Leave that thing Alone are 3 of my all time fav Rush songs

Test for Echo-Extremely disappointing follow up to a great album. Almost sounds like Neil took lyric writing off. Worst lyrics of any Rush album

Vapor Trails-Yes, an emotional album for the band. Yes, it was the band getting to know each other again. But at the end of the day, they just didn't quite make it. Even outside the sound, I'm not a fan of most of the songs. Though I do love Earthshine

Snakes-A Soft album. Too much acoustic. But gets a little extra for Far Cry, one of the all time best

Clockwork Angels-Redemption. As good as it can get at this stage of their career. Rush coming back to their roots

That was fun!

Corrected. Bowl City you have bizarre taste buddy! Also, where do you get your name from?

Last name is Bowler, and one of my friends in high school started calling me BowlCity, and it just kinda stuck. To this day I still don't get the context.

There are just a LOT of songs from the '70s that I really don't like.

I could never give the debut more than a star and a half. Working Man is a good song. The rest of the album is pretty bad. Fly By Night was better, with their first truly awesome song (By-Tor), but apart from that, In The End, and Anthem, the rest of the album is mediocre. I have tried to love Caress of Steel. I really have. But I cannot stand ITIGB or Lakeside Park. The Necromancer to me isn't that great either, but Fountain of Lamneth is good. Same goes for 2112. Title track, Something For Nothing, and Tears are good. The other 3 are pretty meh IMO.

I think what's confused people the most is that I don't consider AFTK a classic. There are some great songs on it, but the shorter songs are pretty bad.

What confuses ME is the dislike of the later albums. Say what you will about sound production or lyrics, I'm ultimately interested in the music. I don't think I've ever paid much attention to lyrics. Counterparts, Snakes, and Clockwork have great songs IMO

To each their own, though! :D-13:

Closer To The Heart isn't a bad song. It's a TIRED song. I've grown to dislike it as the years have gone by, and at this point the only version of CTTH I'll listen to is the Rio version, because nothing beats Geddy Lee + 50k crazy Brazilians.

It's still a better song than Cinderella Man or Madrigal, though.

I agree about the tired comment. Don't diss the other two. It makes my heart hurt

Thanks for the explanation! I'm not trying to rip on your taste, it's just interesting to me the way you rank the albums. It's unpredictable! I'll admit, I've tried, but I just can't get too into any Rush albums after Power Windows... I wish I could! So is Counterparts really your favorite?

It is. Lean hard rock sound with plenty of progressive elements and spots where they show musical chops. Oh, and the songs are good too :)

But whatever you do, don't listen to it immediately after you have listened to AFTK or Hemispheres.

I probably have done exactly that before. Love Hemispheres, not so much AFTK.

Sometimes there is just no accounting for bad taste. It is blasphemous to post that you don't care much for AFTK.

Never had a problem being Blasphemous on here......I gave AFTK 2 stars. It's got Xanadu and Closer to the Heart. Rest is ok. Hemisphere's stepped it way way up, imo.

Closer To The Heart is the worst song on that album and doesn't even belong on it.

The funniest thread (well, one of them) that I ever read on here had the title of something like "what Rush song do you hate the most?" I don't have to tell you how that one turned out.

Now I'm genuinely curious.
