HomesickAlien
05 April 2014Saturday Tens of thousands of flying foxes dead in a day From the Brisbane Times:http://www.brisbanet...0225-33drr.html This summer we have seen one of the most dramatic animal die-offs ever recorded in Australia: at least 45,500 flying foxes dead on just one extremely hot day in southeast Queensland, according to our new research. While flying foxes are often portrayed as noisy pests, they are protected native species, and declines in their populations have significant environmental ramifications as they spread seeds and pollinate native trees. The mounting toll from repeated mass die-offs across eastern Australia is also significant because of what it tells us about the growing dangers we face from extreme heat. At the beginning of this year, a severe heatwave developed over much of the central and eastern interior of Australia. On January 4, northwest winds blew the heat to southeast Queensland, which is home to black, grey-headed, and little red flying foxes. Record temperatures were recorded at nine locations, including Nambour (42.9°C), Beerburrum (43.4°C) and Archerfield (43.5°C). The hottest was Beaudesert, in the Gold Coast hinterland, where temperatures hit a withering 44.6°C. Soon, social media outlets were abuzz with sightings of mass flying fox deaths, while news sites reported thousands of dead falling from the sky. http://i.imgur.com/RDonHOG.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/BfMtrxW.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/yFkNUCL.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/cYcxpFS.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/eVlmx55.jpg

HomesickAlien
06 April 2014Sunday Jumper Ants Myrmecia sp. http://www.abc.net.a.../10/3800146.htmhttp://home.iprimus..../jumperant.html Found throughout southeastern Australia and Tasmania, jumper ants can deliver a nasty sting. Although established nests can form massive mounds, they are often difficult to find, and may be present under rocks, with the entrance surrounded by a pile of fine gravel. Typically, a couple of sentry ants are present at the entrance. The ants are aggressive, and often hunt alone. They will stray away from the nest, and at times find their way into people's houses and kitchens. It is very difficult to avoid being stung by jumper ants when nests are located close to homes. http://i.imgur.com/Ss4AjYH.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ZwChmFZ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/RLxCNqE.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/SuOrOmT.jpg

HomesickAlien
One pound dark caps in an hour today bro! I mostly look for the larger tan caps, but it's far too early for them here. We've had a week of relatively warm, rainy weather, so maybe I should hunt for the smaller, darker ones!

We've had a week of relatively warm, rainy weather, so maybe I should hunt for the smaller, darker ones! The dark caps have a more intense flavor IMO. Generally harder to spot because they don't grow to full maturity. Deer and turkey hit on them early in spring due to the lack of other vegetation sprouting. Hunting them reminds me of taking a color vision test. I'm training my sons to hunt them but I have to bribe them with "pokemon" points. If they find 10 they get a pack of cards.
