Excellent link.

That story (and an entire series called "The Age of Autism") was written by Dan Olmstead, a writer for UPI. I've met Dan, and personally thanked him for what he did with that series. Dan doesn't have a child with autism, he took on the cause because the story needs telling.

That story is specifically about the near-lack of autism found in Amish communities. Fascinating. Amish people rarely vaccinate their children, and their diet is much more wholesome than the typical American's diet.

"The autism rate for U.S. children is 1 in 166, according to the federal government. The autism rate for the Amish around Middlefield, Ohio, is 1 in 15,000, according to Dr. Heng Wang.

He means that literally: Of 15,000 Amish who live near Middlefield, Wang is aware of just one who has autism. If that figure is anywhere near correct, the autism rate in that community is astonishingly low."

That was part one, published six days ago. Couldn't seem to find part two. Perhaps the author's column is weekly, and we'll see part two tomorrow?

Actually it was published in 2005. The second part of the article is found at the link in my post just above.

I'm very sorry for posting that in this thread. I guess sometimes I get carried away and talk the way I do with my friends in this forum. I did not mean any insult by it and I hope I can be forgiven. I thought it was an obvious joke that he would not take offense to. Once again I am sorry.

I've noticed that NASCAR is really embracing Autism. I do believe there used to be a driver who had a newphew with Autism. I've also seen many of the announcers during the NFL season wearing the Autism Speaks emblem on their lapels.

I just wanted to share something that my son made.

I check out this thread all the time, but usually just lurk and rarely post. I've shared my story of Autism in the past but I'll just give a quick refresh.

My son Matthew was diagnosed with Autism when he was three, we've narrowed his condition down to Asperger's syndrome. Nowhere near what GG and Cygnus deal with on a daily basis, but we have our own things to deal with. He is going to be 9 next month and is in 3rd grade. As typical of those with Aspergers, he excels in math, science and computers. He doesn't do so well in any type of liberal arts or creative areas.....or so we thought.

Our school district runs an annual art show featuring all of the best artists in our schools. Grades K-5 have all childrens art in them. This year the 3rd grade did paintings.

We never realized that our son actually can paint. His picture is below and we've come to find out was comleted in one sitting. This was done free hand just by looking at the photo in front of him. I can't express how proud my wife and I are!

That's an amazing picture. Tony is very visual too. He tries to draw, but he's really likes my digital camera. He's very careful of it, and although many of his pictures are of nothing, he does look like he's actually trying to frame his shots. I keep all of them, and at one point thought of putting them together in a kind of "here's how Tony sees his world" book.

my 15 year old daughter sustained brain damage as a baby (the result of her metabolic disorder not being diagnosed at that point) and has some autistic spectrum behaviour. She never refers to herself as I or me, always by her first name. Her speech is very stilted and difficult to understand if you aren't tuned into her (and even then it can be tricky). She was very delayed in all her milestones (but we were told that was to be expected because of her rough start), even a congenital dislocated hip was misdiagnosed and untreated until she was 2. The metabolic disorder was diagnosed at 5 and there were a lot of quick and spectacular improvements when this was treated. She has epilepsy that is not fully controlled at present and moderate to severe learning disabilities, mobility issues, partial sight, growth disorder and high blood pressure. The neuro's agree that she has autistic spectrum behaviour but think this is not necessary to add to her list of "formal" diagnosis! Thy said she can't be autistic because we know what the cause of the damage is! She is a happy child, loves music, but is nothing like a 15 year old. This board has been one of the things that has kept me going.

thanks for letting me ramble
