Any Tom Waits Fans?

Recommended Posts

These are some of my favorite Tom Waits songs:

"Martha"

"Tom Traubert's Blues"

"16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought-Six"

"Downtown Train"

He's an artist I always appreciated, but I never gave his discography a proper and respectful listen.

Anyway, he's one of a kind and an American treasure.

I'm going to spin some Tom Waits tonight...

Tom Waits is a personal favourite of mine. Absolutely adore pretty much everything he does. The 'Island Years' albums (Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years, and Bone Machine) are my favourites. But I love everything. Alice, Orphans (awesome 3-disc collection of B-Sides, covers, and new material), Mule Variations, Blue Valentine, The Heart Of Saturday Night, Nighthawks At The Diner, etc. I could go on and on about Tom. The man is a treasure.

And with all of that said, Bad As Me, his newest album, is an absolute gem. I'd rank it high with my favourites, but let's be honest, they're all my favourites at some point haha.

The song that got me into his music:

I remember hearing this and I was so thrown off by his voice, but I listened to it and had to keep going back to it to hear it again and again. Eight years later and I'm such a huge fan. Not to mention the fact that he's been writing and producing a ton of these songs/albums with his wife. I'm completely mesmerized by his music.

He can very demented when he wants to lol.

No artist has ever made me collect their music like a crack addict. and i'm including EVERYBODY here, lol.....yes even Rush. I collected Tom's music faster then I have with any artist.

I've been taking in a lot of Tom Waits the past two days. Wow. When it sinks in, it sinks in. The man is a master.

Wonderful songs that stand out:

"Cold Cold Ground"

"Gun Street Girl"

"(Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night" (you're welcome, Bruce Springsteen)

"I Don't Wanna Grow Up"

"Mr. Siegal"

I can't get the song "Martha" out of my head!

It's a wonderfully sad and touching song - holding on to love from a relationship long gone.

And those were the days of roses, of poetry and prose

And Martha all I had was you and all you had was me

There was no tomorrows, we packed away our sorrows

And we saved them for a rainy day

That is a great Record. totally different to what he would become. and it's interesting to hear his voice not as gnarled.

I love Tom.......i can't even stress how much.

the passion folks have for metal and prog here is what i feel for Tom.

This was my first Tom Waits album, which I picked up waaaay back in 1979 when I was a lad of just 16.

It was unlike anything I was listening to at the time.

(Perhaps a slight hint of Dylan)

I loved it immediately and have been a big fan of his music ever since.
