coventry
You notice how every now and then an otherwise small part of a Rush tune will suddenly jump out at you and attain hitherto unforseen significance? So the other day I'm listening to "Nocturne" and that little fill Neil does at 3:42-3:44 just leaped out at me as being perfect for the part. It's not too flashy, but it's quick, precise, and drives the tune exactly between parts and tempos. It's the perfect transition fill. Can you think of any others? Any other fills Neil does that so perfectly bridge and connect sections of songs? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYjhcoBh7-Y

coventry
http://youtu.be/Y7qSBo6TUYM?t=3m5s Good call; that herky-jerky rhythm can only be resolved by the hi-hat build-up.

coventry
Yeah- that's when Neil does that incredible ascending tom fill -- kinda like on the ESL version of "La Villa"

Yeah, but it's that first fill that comes in when the clip plays that I really love. I don't think I even noticed it the first few listens -- too focused on Alex's solo -- I'm glad I finally did...it's one of my favorites. Subtle, and he suspends time right in the middle of it. Slack jaw gaze
The one in Caravan was the one Nick convinced him to do and Geddy remarked "He wants to make you famous."

The one at 2:24 isn't even needed, yet it's perfect for where it is.

twwells
I've always had a great fondness for the fill in Lakeside Park at the beginning and especially after the first chorus before the main verse kicks back in at the 1:00 mark, just killer! http://youtu.be/KZgP2k4bwoc?t=1m
