Exactly why do people hate Dog Years again?

It shouldn't need to be said, but here's why this song doesn't work:

In a dog's life

A year is really more like seven

And all too soon a canine

Will be chasing cars in doggie heaven

It seems to me

As we make our own few circles 'round the sun

We get it backwards

And our seven years go by like one

Dog years --- It's the season of the itch

Dog years --- With every scratch it reappears

In the dog days

People look to Sirius

Dogs cry for the moon

But these connections are mysterious

It seems to me

While it's true that every dog will have his day

When all the bones are buried

There is barely time to go outside and play

Dog years --- It's the season of the itch

Dog years --- With every scratch it reappears

Dog years --- For every sad son of a bitch

Dog years --- With his tail between his ears

I'd rather be a tortoise from Galapagos

Or a span of geological time

Than be living in these dog years

In a dog's brain

A constant buzz of low-level static

One sniff at the hydrant

And the answer is automatic

It seems to me

As well make our own few circles 'round the block

We've lost our senses

For the higher-level static of talk

I second that!

Time and Motion is way worse, musically, than Dog Years. No idea about the lyrics. If the music is not good, I don't care what the lyrics are.

Half the World isn't half bad. The geek in me likes the fact it may be the world record holding rock song for most fractions.

Not their best, absolutely. But I don't see anything wrong with this song. Okay, Neil wrote best songs. Every band has ups and downs. Rush doesn't have downs.

I popped in Test For Echo today at random, and one track caught my ear as especially fun, lighthearted, catchy, and instrumentally worthwhile. That track is Dog Years.

I've seen a lot of hate for it over the years on here. Why?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this track, other than that it doesn't take itself too seriously... which isn't really anything wrong with it. It's a great song!

The chorus (vocals & guitar) sucks, the lyrics (for the most part) suck, but the rest is good. So it's a decent TFE song.

"It seems to me..."

^ love that moment

All due respect to Rush and their talents and influence on rock and roll, but slapping stale music onto a nonsensical paragraph about dogs licking their balls "tail between their ears..." and managing to make it sound pretentious at the same time is not the way to win (and keep) fans. And just because you use the word Galapagos in a song, doesn't make it any f***ing better.

I hope one day, before Rush hangs it up, they'll realize that they're entitled to diversify. Break out of this "phoning it in" phase, and use the talent we know you all have to make something new and different and exciting.

During the odd times I put on T4E, I will skip ahead to Dog Years. I like the puns. They make me smile.

I think it's musically very well done. The lyrics are just kind of there for me and don't bother me or detract from the music. I do love the "people look to Sirius" line although I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean on a literal level. That wordplay is cool.

I think it's more interesting than Half the World and Carve Away the Stone. The Color of Right has really grown on me and might be one of my faves now. Really nice song. That Totem and the title track are my top 3.

I would like to hear it live. The musicianship is good and it has a good pace for a live setting.

just how many of these shitty e-cards do you plan on posting?

(and yes, it would be extremely clever to use yet another in response)

Hate is a big word, it's still Geddy, Alex and Neil playing for 4 minutes, as long as i can hear their instruments and voice and that it's not muddy or cacaphonic

makes one wonder how THIS song got so popular...

Yeah, yeah

Don't wanna wait 'til you know me better

Let's just be glad for the time together

Life's such a treat and it's time you taste it

There ain't a reason on earth to waste it

It ain't a crime to be good to yourself

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, it's only right now

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, ooh yeah

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, come on, come on

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, ooh

Don't need to wait for an invitation

You gotta live like you're on vacation

There's something sweet you can't buy with money

Lick it up, woo, lick it up

It's all you need, so believe me honey

It ain't a crime to be good to yourself

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, it's only right now

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, ooh yeah

Lick it up, lick it up, oh, come on, come on

Sirius is also known as the "dog star" in the constellation Canis Major (The Great Dog).

Not their most horrendous song - that's probably Anagram. The line "seven years go by as one" has always resonated with me, especially as I get older.

Edit: add Canis Major

For me it's just the lyrics really.

Same with Viruality but moreso- Awesome music but corny lyrics.

I don't have a problem with Dog Years, keeping in mind it is meant to be a fun, lighthearted song.

I wouldn't play it on repeat or anything, but every once in awhile is fine.
