All nominations will go in a poll and we'll see who the true overrated guitar bastard in rock is! :madra:

My nomination is for Ted Nugent who, between political rants, seems to be living under an illusion that he's viewed as some kind of guitar hero for the masses. And he does seem to have some kind of good guitar playing reputation with some people, which I can't really understand how he achieved. The reason I nominate him, firstly his tone which is awful, he's always calling people soulless but it's his tone that's the most soulless of all. His chops are terrible too, if guitar playing is a language Ted's guitar speaks gibberish, just like he does in English. His songwriting and riffs are also really, really weak as well. I think there's one album that's not bad, the first one from back in 1975, and a couple of songs after that, everything else is forgettable bullshit for the most part.

Ok that's my nomination, who's your nomination for most overrated guitarist in rock?

:guitar: :hi: :NP: :madra: :smoke:

Joe Perry. I don't get why so many people love him but overlook Brad Whitford, who is a far better guitarist IMO.

This is true too.

Yes. Fierce validity. Brad is the man.

Technique-wise. But his songwriting and arrangement is amazing.

Rock music? Gotta expand that...take out all the references in your rant to Sweaty Teddy and insert the name Allan Holdsworth (especially soul-less). Buckethead has produced nothing memorable. Nugent has something these guitarists lack...feel!!! Give me feel anyday over someone wanking on a guitar without a groove. Virtuosity is impressive but incredibly boring without feel. Holdsworth wins!!!

I feel bad saying this, but I have to go with Carlos Santana.

I appreciate his talent, but I have to say that (for me) a little bit of Santana is more than enough.

No disrespect to Carlos or to his fans, of course.

John Petrucci, fantastic technique but no feel or soul. Just beats out Satriani.

Kirk Hammett. Absolutely dreadful, but has achieved mega guitar god status.

Other worthy contenders for me are Jimmy Page (after all this time, still can't bend in tune or do clean slurs :smash: ) ,the Edge & Cobain, who both just plain reek.

JMO, all the best to people who like these guys, no offence meant at all.

Oh, Slash is massively overrated too.

I agree on Hammet, Slash, The Edge and Cobain, all worthy contenders.

You're all wrong. It's Kurt Cobain.

Has Kurt been named a great guitarist somewhere? I must have missed this

In terms of notoriety holdsworth is way underrated for what he is doing, mans a genius.

But to answer the op 's post, Eric Clapton gets my vote ...old slow hand?

Hammet too, a lot of his solos have the same shape - sound the same?
