Rush Vinyl Collection...the Normal and the Abnormal

I love this image! What a classic shot. The 4th UK 12" release was Rush Live! (EXIT 12) featuring Tom Sawyer, A Passage To Bangkok, and Red Barcetta. All of the tracks were taken from the Exit...Stage Left Album. Not as frequent on the eBay circuit as some of the others, a bit of patience will bring this one to you in great condition. Of note, the label on the album is the Chicgo skyline image, rather than the deep blue Mercury label we saw on the first 3 releases.

I've got a 12" similiar to that one. It's got A Passage To Bangkok and Freewill on it, from Exit Stage Left.

The Special Edition one with the picture of Geddy with his hands in the air (US-issued Mercury MK-188)? Its on my want list. I have my eye on a copy right now, but the guy is charging an astronomical amount to ship it and won't budge. Frustrating because its right there for the taking...but I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger because of the stupid shipping cost.

I just won a South Korean version of 2112 without the Red Star because the Red Star is a sign of communism and shows support to North Korea.

Very nice! Another one that I'm considering picking up, if for no other reason than for the historical significance.

The next UK-issued 12" is a pretty common version that makes its way onto eBay, discogs, and other sites quite regularly. Featuring New World Man on Side A and Vital Signs (Live) and Freewill (Live) on Side B, Mercury RUSH 812 is shown below. Of note, the return of the dark blue Mercury label. Yay!

That's exactly the one. I don't remember what I paid for it but it wasn't to costly.

The price of the one that I'm looking at is somewhat reasonable...its the shipping that's absurd. Its essentially the same cost as the disk itself! I just can't bring myself to committing to that...no matter how badly I'd like to add the disc to the collection. Frustrating really...

Now we're starting to get into some really interesting phases of Rush singles, both in the 12" and 7" formats. There was a lot of creativity in the packaging and the track releases (as well as a desire to reap the financial rewards of oversaturation to some degree) during this timeframe - not just with Rush, but with all bands. However, this is a forum about the Holy Triumvirate, so let's move on to the next UK 12" maxi-single - Subdivisions!

RUSH 912 - Side A: Subdivisions; Side B: Red Barchetta and Jacob's Ladder (sorry for the shiny photos...the outer sleeve is really glossy and reflected the light like crazy)

Strange cover with the "countup" at the bottom, but the boys continue their symbolic trend of "threes" by including three target like icons and three cloud-shaped objects.

OK...one more before the end of the day (well, at least for me!)...

This was a peculiar release. Take a look at the pictures and see if you can figure out why. I'll post the "answer at the end of this post.

Mercury RUSH 1012 - Side A: New World Man/Spirit of Radio (Live) Side B: Excerpts from an Interview/Countdown

http://i.imgur.com/NElIBIK.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/qeL1w5A.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/mrLfqg1.jpg

So what's peculiar about this release? A couple of things. Its the first "legit" 12" to feature any sort of interview? Yup. We're back to the paper label? Yup. But here is the most odd thing about this disc. Everything about the cover SCREAMS space travel and the space shuttle, naturally alluding to the song "Countdown". Its right on the cover! So why is it on Side B as the 2nd track? Since Mercury released New World Man shortly beforehand, why would this track be the Side A showcase? Strange isn't it?

More to come tomorrow including some Atlantic era releases!

I' have the Korean 2112 myself. It's definately a fave of mine.

I'm pretty sure I have most of the UK 12s. I think I'm missing Countdown.

I started out not really wanting to get involved in the UK releases, but the fact is they are very creative over in the UK with their formats and I was sucked in by the artwork and how much cooler (and more plentiful) it was than the US releases (Marillion is another good example.)

By this point, the only unreleased tracks that were never commercially released on any albums were the B-Side from Exit... Stage Left (Vital Signs) and the excerpt of the Countdown Interview (which if I recall comes from that Signals Radio Special you posted earlier.). That was another reason I hadn't wanted to get involved with the UK releases as a lot of it is the same stuff so I mainly have them for the cool art.

That " Special Edition" is one of my favorites too. It seems to be a lot rarer than it should be, and of course the live cover is pretty neat too.

King Dirk:

The Moon single and the Moon album are high on my list of grails, but until the prices come down a bit, I have to hold back until the disposable income frees up for such impulse purchases.

I don't think the prices on those will ever come down. Those seem to be the only two releases that have been holding their value for a while now possibly due to the fact that you have other record collectors who aren't necessarily Rush fans interested in those.

It's also interesting that there always seem to be people who are sell their copy on a somewhat regular basis, possibly because they know that they will almost certainly get their money back. Or maybe they found a better copy and are upgrading. You wpuld think something like this would be impossible to find, but they don't seem to be if you really want one. The single is probably the rarer and more expensive of the two I'd say....

It's true what you say...the Moon single and album do feature somewhat regularly on eBay and other sites. And the prices stay up there...likely for the reasons you mention. As a fan, I would love to have the first pieces of the band I love. But I can wait for them. I had a shot a couple of weeks back (I mentioned it in one of my posts) to get the single. There it was...sitting 5 feet away from me. But I simply couldn't part with the $800. I check collectorsfrenzy.com on a regular basis to see what things are going for (if you haven't checked it out, its an aggregate site that monitors what's being sold in the vinyl world and for how much. I've seen the Moon album go for as little as $275...now THAT, I would splurge on.

The Canadian 12" singles from Anthem are insanely hard to find...simply because there were hardly any released. Any that were promos went to radio stations, and there weren't many of those in Canada that played music like Rush. I have a couple of them (I'll share them on this posting soon), but aside from their scarcity, there isn't much special about them (aside from The Weapon and Lock and Key). What I'm finding to be extremely frustrating to find (and expensive) are 45s from other countries, as well as the early radio specials sent out as promos by Anthem. I collect old radio shows on vinyl as well, and these are grails to me. I have a pile that feature Rush (they really are pretty cool artifacts, especially with the cue sheets), but the Anthem ones are truly rare. Also Rush vinyl bootlegs...there are probably a dozen or so that were ever made. I have about 10 of those (again...a later picture feature), but there are 2 that I'm having the hardest time sourcing. Ah...I love collecting!

Now we start to get into some of the fun stuff released in the UK.

I wish I knew the full history on this (if you know, please share it), but this is the first 12" release by Vertigo - the label that took over distribution of Rush albums in the UK beginning with this release - RUSH 1112 - The Body Electric. What's interesting is that they continued the catalog nominclature from Mercury. Maybe this isn't a big thing - again, I'm not sure - but to me, its one of those small idiosyncracies that makes vinyl collecting a good ol' time. This disc became a bit rarer than most of the other UK releases because it quickly became the less desireable of the two Body Electric releases - with the really cool RUSH 1110 (See next posting) 10" released in gorgeous red vinyl on the same date, most people opted for the 10"...leaving the 12" to languish on store shelves.

Tracks on this disc are: Side A: The Body Electric; Side B: The Analog Kid/Distant Early Warning

As mentioned above, the 10" release of The Body Electric had a unique property to it that caused sales of the 12" to dwindle. With the same artwork (but with a white border) and the same track listing, the big draw was the vinyl itself. I LOVE coloured vinyl. I know that there are those in the VC that say that black vinyl holds better sound than coloured...I don't care. I just love that producers were creative enough to try something different with our beloved records. And don't get me started on the marbled vinyl that's out there...gorgeous stuff! I only wish that when Rush released Feedback on vinyl, they continued the psychaedelic motif and through ti-dyed colouring on the disc. That would have been so cool.

Anyways...on to Vertigo RUSH 1110 - The Body Electric...on clear red vinyl. Track listing same as above. :rush:

I bought all of my replacement sleeves and outer sleeves at bagsunlimited.com. Another option is clearbags.com, but being from Canada, they wouldn't shop the record sleeves here for whatever reason. They sell them in packs of 50 or so...

I guess I'm a purist, but where possible I always try to keep the original sleeve if it isn't completely destroyed and if I know it's original. Sometimes it's impossible to tell though.

I have all vinyl formats on the UK The Body Electric (7, 10, 12). I think my favorite is the 12 because the picture sleeve just might be my favorite Rush front cover photo ever. I love that photo. At that time there was still that perception that they were serious all of the time and this photo was one of the few that debunked that theory.

I'm reasonably certain it was taken April 8, 1983 in Montreal (I believe I matched the photo to the bootleg video once-- I suppose I can double check that on you tube) If I recall correctly, it also makes an appearence in the Grace Under Pressure tourbook.

I don't have many 45s from countries other than Canada, US and the UK. I have a few from Japan and a few other countries, but they are usually difficult to find and tend to be more than I want to pay for them when I do run across them. I'm not even sure exactly what is out there because those releases aren't as frequent as in the US, UK and Canada.

I'd have to check, but I think my Canadian Copy of that Special Edition A Passage To Bangkok 12 inch also has a buildings and trees label like the other two do. Apparently, the record label must have been in some sort of transition then

Perhaps there is a bit of a misunderstanding...some of the 12" singles that I get come in beat up old generic white of black outer sleeves, so I simply replace them with new generic white or black outer sleeves. I too am a purist and if the inner sleeve isn't completely falling apart, I keep it...warts and all. Same goes for the outer picture sleeves, although I tend not to buy anything that looks like it was a coaster for a kegger at a college dorm. I make sure that everything I pick up is in top shape, or relatively so. What I do buy from bagsunlimited.com however, is polyurethane resealable records sleeves in order to protect the whole record. For the investment I make in my vinyl, I want to make sure that they are kept in top notch shape. They're pretty inexpensive and help you to avoid shelfwear.

Body Electric...LOVE that photo too. Just the guys being...well, guys!

UPDATE...as luck would have it, I went to an antique market this past weekend, and as I rummaging through a random bin of vinyl, I stumbled upon a mint, still sealed copy of Passage to Bangkok Special Edition that I had been looking for at a fraction of what I saw on eBay. I found that plus an Anthem 12" single that I didn't have - SPE-011 New World Man b/w Vital Signs (not overly rare, but still a nice find at the price I paid) and two Yes boots...all in mint condition. As you can imagine...that made my weekend! Photos to come soon...

After a somewhat relaxing weekend, its time to get back to business...the business of vinyl!

Next in line from the 12" maxi-single collection is 1985's The Big Money - Vertigo RUSH1212. On Side A, you have The Big Money followed by Territories. Side B features Red Sector A (Live). This is, I believe, the first Vertigo yellow label to be featured on a 12" single for Rush.

For some reason, Vertigo was especially creative in the promotion of Hold Your Fire. Not only were there two 12" maxi-singles released, but they were interestingly packaged. I'll start with the flagship song on this album: Time Stand Still.

The marketing on this song was bombastic to say the least. The blazen red cover of HYF was everywhere...7", 12", full album. You'll come to see though, that on the 7", they were quite creative in HOW they packaged "the three balls". But for now, let's look at the Vertigo TSS singles. SINGLES, you ask? Vertigo released TSS (RUSH 1312) with Force Ten on Side A and The Enemy Within and Witch Hunt (both live from the Grace Under Pressure Tour) on Side B. The now familiar yellow Vertigo label made another appearance (sorry...forgot to take a picture of the label). The reason I say "singles" plural is because Vertigo also issued a distinct version of this disc as an "Advanced DJ Copy Only", aptly catalogued as RUSH 1312DJ. Packaged in a plain white sleeve, this promo release is relatively more difficult to find than its stock counterpart.

Vertigo also "came to the table" with a truly unique collectible, and one of my personal favorites...RUSH P1312 Time Stand Still Picture Disc. With Force Ten on Side A and The Enemy Within (Live) on Side B, this disc is popular with collector's solely for the artwork.

Welcome to the forum...not sure if you've posted here before...but welcome nonetheless. So from CoS to PW...which one is wearing down on your turntable the most? In other words, which of those is due for a refreshed copy in the near future?

On August 23rd 1988, Vertigo issued two versions of Prime Mover as 12" maxi-singles. Strangely, the track listings were different, but more importantly, the outer sleeves were noticably different.

The first disc - RUSH 1412 had Prime Mover on Side A, with Open Secrets and Tai Shan as the B-sides. The cover is identical to the juggler used for the Time Stand Still and other than the track listing, its quite indistinguishable. The second version though (RUSH R1412) had a unique cover. Identical in design (ie. the juggler) to RUSH 1412, this one had a reflective metallic effect to the cover. I'm not sure if the photos do it justice, but trust me...it looks really cool. The track listing for RUSH R1412 is Side A: Prime Mover/Tai Shan Side B: Distant Early Warning/New World Man (both live). Also, the disc labels have changed from the yellow to the black lable with red "Rush" in HyF font.

There are some on this forum that love the Atlantic era. Others despise it. I'm in the former group. I really enjoy Rush in the Atlantic era starting with Presto and working its way to the present day. One of my favorite albums (and I know...many of you think its a weak point) is Roll The Bones. I truly love listening to this album. Ghost of a Chance, with Neil's poetic lyrics ("I don't believe in destiny, or the guiding hand of fate...") and the title track with "the rap", make this a turning point for the band. Coming out of the 80s with its polarizing synth sound, Roll The Bones brought about a new Rush. Strangley enough, but not surprising, Vapor Trails brought the same sense of polarity amongst the fanbase twelve years later with its brooding, raucous sound (take the poor mastering out of it for a bit and focus on the songs themselves)...another turning point.

One of the most widely marketed tracks in the long and storied careers of Rush is Roll The Bones. When we get to the US 12" releases and the 7" singles, no other track was pushed out on the market and the radio waves as much as RTB. In the UK, Atlantic released RTB in several formats, including the now infamous and desired "square dice" 7" pic disc (which I'll show you when I upload the RTB 7" photos). However, as far as I know, they released the track as a 12" single promo for radio play only...and they did it in a peculiar format through a distributor called EastWest. Check out the Rock Ahead labels! With that, I give you SAM 869 (Atlantic) Side A: Roll The Bones Side B: Face Up/Dreamline...with a little surprise at the end. ;) Enjoy!

I love Counterparts.

There. I said it. Counterparts has consistently been in my top 3 Rush albums. There's an edge. There's sentiment. There's emotion. There's raw energy.

So when I saw that this maxi-single was available, I simply had to add it. The final UK 12" that I own and I believe the final UK promo ever issued prior to the influx of CDs...

Presenting...

Atlantic SAM 1263

Side A: Stick It Out/Cold Fire

Side B: Nobody's Hero/Double Agent
