Kingdirk
This thread made me pull out all my Rush vinyl "collection" for a family snapshot ;) http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3719/9092674130_858fcfa34e_c.jpgAww...that's so cute. The Analog Grownup
I hope the next three records I find will be 2112, Hold Your Fire and Power Windows. A couple of years ago I found them, but back then I didn't want them. Now that I want them I can't find them.
robertrobyn
As promised, here is another piece of "long lost" Rush vinyl history...the 1981 promotional release "Rush n' Roulette" (another forum on this site has addressed this disc as well). From all accounts, this item is extremely rare and from a vinyl production point-of-view, wonderfully unique. Mastered using a special technique called "parallel" or "concentric" grooves, this disc lives up to its name. Originally released as a promo to radio stations, this disc has become one of only a handful of popular music releases to feature this strange and distinctive playing ability. Simply put...there are six tracks on this disc (identical on the reverse) that are 2:00 minutes each. When you drop the needle on the outer edge of the disc, the needle randomly selects which track its going to play. Do it again and you might get a different song...or perhaps the same one. Bizarre! And sooooo cool! Month Python and De La Soul are perhaps the two most widely referenced examples of this type of mastering. I managed to find a near mint version of this release. How many were released? Who knows, but with promotional items, you have to imagine that the release amount was pretty limited. Factor in years-gone-by and poor storage...how many are left? Who knows. I tried to capture a photo of the grooves so you could see how they were different from a conventional pressing. Enjoy! More coming in every day...more pics to follow! http://i.imgur.com/IgmnPgh.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/I7ZJ6uh.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/iPD6zAP.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/QaBO7Wh.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/3jVokae.jpgI got my copy a few days ago and I love it. The Natural Scientist
I just saw power windows unopened at my local record shop but I don't have a player. I would be happy to trade it to someone for a couple of live cds or a cool poster or tshirt!

Kingdirk
Hi Everyone...sorry for the lack of posts and pics, but life has simply been nuts lately. To continue with the US 12" singles theme, we move on to MK-125, a promotional release from Mercury featuring The Spirit of Radio on Side A and The Trees/Working Man on Side B. This disc featuring semi-regularly on eBay so its not as scarce as one might think; not out there in droves, but definitely out there. Interesting mis-label on Side A though...The Spirit of "the" Radio. I'm sure the Rush purists out there are cursing aloud... http://i.imgur.com/c79Te1j.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/2fUfdWf.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/SaZUP49.jpg

The Analog Grownup
Just a quick question to my fellow vinyl enthusiasts. Do you clean your records, and if so with what? I have a few records with too much dirt and grime in the grooves, and it's bothering me. After I got my Mofi release of Permanent Waves, I have heard how quiet a record can be. I have a few records with too much dirt and grime in the grooves, and it's bothering me. After I got my Mofi release of Permanent Waves, I have heard how quiet a record can be.For general surface dust, I use a static brush. As the disc spins on the platter, I place the fibres on the disc and slowly sweep outwards from the centre, drawing the dust to the outside edge. For deeper "gunk", I've been told that simple mild dish soap and warm water does the trick. Fill your kitchen sink with some suds, dip the disc in as far as the label, and use a microfibre cloth or any non-abrasive cloth (cloth baby diapers work fantastically...clean, of course.) to "scrub" the dirt away from the centre. Repeat the process on the whole disc until its cleaned. There are also disc washing "systems" out there that do pretty much the same I've shown above, but you rest the disc on a spindle, and spin it (like a ferris wheel) into the solution. Hope that helps...
The Analog Grownup
I have an anti-static brush that I'm using, but it rarely takes it all. Sometimes it looks like the dust is in the grooves and then the brush won't work. I haven't tried washing my records because I am afraid I might destroy them. Some stores offer products for cleaning records, but is it just the same in the end?

Some stores offer products for cleaning records, but is it just the same in the end? They may offer a special soap or a mechanism to help you clean it. I would be more inclined to start with one of their products before going on my own though. The products they offer are designed to do a specific job while mild soap is meant to wash your dishes, car, stains out of the carpet, etc. I would suggest going with something that is meant to clean records, especially if they are in pretty rough shape. I have been able to take an old record that sounds poppy, and turn into a virtually clean sounding record. Of course it does nto get rid of scratches, so a record that appears scratched stays scratched. Also, I wanted to chime in on the love of vinyl and Rush. I discovered Rush going through my older brothers vinyl collection. I fell in love with the art and imagery on the gatefolds as well as the music in the grooves. I have since been a fanatical Rush fan. I have finally completed my collection of Rush on vinyl recently with a Brazilian copy of Counterparts. The only ones that I do not have on vinyl are the ones that were not pressed, which is Test For Echo and Different Stages. I have a Brazilian copy of Chronicles and a German pressing of Roll The Bones. The rest of which are US releases. I have the 45 of Caravan and BU2B, but I don't have many other 45s or 7 inch.

It would be cool to have that version of the entire 2112 masterpiece LIVE and on vinyl.

The Analog Grownup
This is definitely something! A picture disc in the shape of a space shuttle. Of course I'm talking about the Countdown single :) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rush-Countdown-Picture-Disc-Rare-Vinyl-UK-1st-press-OOP-Ex-/251318402940?pt=UK_Records&hash=item3a83be7f7c
OGr8imL84AD8inF8sBlackSedan
OK...so the item I'm going to show here is proof that I am a completeist (my wife says obsessive compulsive). Over the past little while, I've been receiving a pile of new Rush discs, from 45s to pic discs to rare bootlegs to the truly obscure (I promise...as soon as I can find the time, I'll take the pics and share them with you). However, this one I've particular been looking forward to its arrival. There is nothing legitimate about this item, but I simply HAD to have it. I'm almost not even concerned about the sound (which I'll test drive tonight)...it just looks SO COOL! I've Googled this thing to death and all I can find is another forum discussing its legitimacy (see above), but no one can confirm it. It cost me a pretty penny to bring in and I know that the band didn't get anything for it, but as I mentioned in my first statement...I'm a completeist. Check it out and let me know your thoughts... http://i.imgur.com/xaXt5dm.jpg?1http://i.imgur.com/2fy6EJx.jpg?1 Never have seen that before. Great album cover....wish I could say the same about the music.

I'm not as big a fan of it as some people and I only got around to getting it around 20 years ago. The odd size makes it impossible to put it in with the other 45s. gabpower
Great topic guys! I finally saw a T4E! I tought it was a legend! You lucky guy. I also collect Rush records but more for a listening experience so I don't go for all the rare bootlegs. Here's a picture from my collection from maybe 3 years ago :http://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/gabpower/Vinyl%20collection/rush.jpg I aquired more records since that picture was taken. The only major albums I need are Test For Echo and Vapor Trails but these two are too expensive/rare. But I'll gladly settle with the Remix version of VT once it's on sale.
