This one is especially tough because it truly is a three way tie to me. I voted for Show Don't Tell, but it is right up there with Chain Lightning and The Pass. Other amazin's are - well every song. There's not a bad one on it that belongs behind the others. However, over the years I have had disgusting obsessions with War Paint, Scars, Presto, and Available Light. My wife's favorite Rush song is also on this CD - Hand Over Fist.

soooo hard to pick..this is my absolute favorite album in the whole entire world!!

..but if i had to pick, it'd probably be Presto.

the evening plane rises up from the runway

over constellations of light

i look down into a million houses

and wonder what you're doing tonight..

soooo many good memories with this album..

"Available Light."

Such a beautiful, ethereal, and evocative song.

It transports, inspires, soothes and heartens.

A song to close your eyes and surrender to, let it penetrate and heal.

The world is so beautiful, and life so intense.

Someone once wrote about Leonardo DaVinci's writings something like,

"What becomes apparent in reading these texts is DaVinci's realization of the impossibility of the task of capturing the intensity of life in words."

"Available Light" is an enjoinment to go outside and sense the world.

To feel life. Pure, unmediated, overwhelming life.

Run with wind and weather

To the music of the sea

All four winds together

Can't bring the world to me...

It was only a couple of years ago when, upon listening to "Anagram," it suddenly dawned on me what Peart was doing with the words in that song. It was like discovering a new dimension, like solving an ancient riddle. I wonder if it was only I that caught on so late.

There's just one issue I have not been able to resolve. In that verse,

He and she are in the house

But there's only me at home

there seems to be a mistake. Is that not so?

I was able to find the exact quote about Da Vinci. It's by Mary Zimmerman, and Google keeps a cached copy of the page here.

What becomes apparent after some time with these texts is that Leonardo himself was aware of the impossibility of his task: experience and nature are infinitely more rich and varied than the descriptive abilities of both the scientist and the artist; in the end, there remains only the impenetrable mystery of the spirit of life itself.

I like war paint off this album. After that, available light is interesting.

i would have to say that no song on this album deserves the best song award. for me this album was always very catchy, but marked a serious downward turn lyrics-wise for rush. a very listenable album, but nothing on it really stands out for me, and it was by far the weakest album they'd ever made up until that point for me... little did i know that test for echo and vapor trails would come along and make presto seem like a shining achievement by comparsion... I am suprised that Scars wasnt higher in the votes. I relate to that song very much since I had some scars in my past. I relate to the quote "each emotional injury really leaves behind its mark, sometimes they come tumbling out like shadows in the dark". Not to mention how awesome the African beat is. It's very different, yet appropriate.
