Five off the top of my head:

Chuck Berry - "Maybellene"

The Beatles - "Tomorrow Never Knows"

King Crimson - "21st Century Schizoid Man"

Led Zeppelin - "Kashmir"

Ramones - "Blitzkreig Bop"

I should have probably added in one pre-60s song in mine

and bathory, just do it off the top of your head, nothing official.

Taking into account the first part (the song's consequential nature) and off the top of my head:

1. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Stones

2. Paranoid - Black Sabbath

3. Revolution - The Beatles

4. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

5. Photograph - Def Leppard

Any my Pandora just gave me one more that I have to include

Sweet Child O'Mine - GNR

5 isn't going to happen for me. I'll shut up now.

By two minutes. ;)

I put Photograph because I think it's the first huge "hair metal" hit. Crazy Train might actually be more accurate though.

What about Stairway to Heaven? Very long song that got airplay and continues to do so

Pick 5 from this list (I can't!)

Rock around the clock - the song that made rock and roll popular

Love me do - beginning of the British Invasion

Imagine - John's song about trying to change all the violence he saw in the world. Very influential tune that has touched many!

Stairway to heaven - thought by many as the #1 classic rock song of all time

Smoke on the water - never has one riff been so popular

Smells like teen spirit - (I know I know. I'm not a grunge fan either but..)

Tom Sawyer - (just had to throw it in here :))

1. Yes - Close to the Edge

2. The Beatles - A Day in the Life

3. ELO - Bluebird

4. Deep Purple - Highway Star

5. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

1. Important in the prog rock scene. An ideal epic structurally, it has a concept, can't even get into the details of the musicianship in text, great amount of sampling / use of atmosphere.

2. Actually, something like the above but on a more general scale.

3. Just added this in here because I think the song's beautiful. Not sure how significant it is.

4. Important for metal, as Deep Purple is in general. Emphasis on the solos here, they're near neoclassical. Definitely impeccable shredding for it's time.

5. Same reason as reason 3

I better not post any songs lest they upset Hatchet Pete! :madra:

Wouldn't want to make him randy :whipgirl:

I'm constantly upset, and randy, so list away!!!

I'm a whirling dervish of naughtiness in spandex.

Verbiage such as that reminds me of "The Big Lebowski"...that's something the freak chick would've said

Is RUSH's Sweet Miracle related to YES's Miracle of Life? :16ton:

I don't know. Is Miracle of Life pretty weak too?

I've always liked Sweet Miracle myself... :haz:

I love Miracle of Life!! It's nuts.

Living in times of luster, waiting for the flood.

We don't agree with your concepts;

You'd rather be washed in blood.

Is it any wonder? (In my lifetime)

Cold depth of blue water...

Is it any wonder? (In my lifetime)

Rising tides of slaughter - shoulda been washed in blood

One of Union's better moments.
